Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 469

I was on him before I knew what I was doing. I raised my hand to slap him across the face, every ounce of my strength behind it.

He caught my wrist mid-air.

His grip was iron, and he stared at me with something like disbelief, and then he moved so fast I did not see it coming. My back slammed against the wall hard enough to knock the air out of me, and his hand closed around my neck, and his voice thundered in my face.

"Who the hell do you think you are?"

The impact brought me back to myself. I could fight. I had fought men twice his size and won. But looking into his eyes in that moment, I remembered, cold and clear, that I was not strong enough to fight him. None of that mattered. Tasha mattered. He had no right to put his hands on her, no matter how strong he was, no matter that we were under his protection.

I glared at him, and my voice came out shaking with fury. "And who the hell do you think you are, Sparrow? Why would you put your hands on Tasha? Why would you beat her like an animal? What kind of man does that to a girl who has already been through hell?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Do not play dumb with me!" I tried to pull free and could not. "It is just the three of us in this house. Who else would have beaten Tasha up?"

"She is what most people would call a weenie."

I stared at him. The words hung in the air between us, and I wanted to hit him again, wanted to scream at him, but something in the flat certainty of his voice had lodged itself in my chest like a splinter. Tasha's tears were real. Her wounds were real. But the man standing in front of me did not look like a liar. He looked like a man who had been asked for something and had given it, and I had no idea which of them I could afford to believe.

No.

Tasha would never lie to me.
