Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 511

SERAPHINE

I opened my eyes and the light shoved itself straight through my skull, white and merciless, and I would have thrown an arm over my face if my arms had been free. They were not free. I pulled and the rope bit into my wrists, and I pulled again and felt the same bite around my ankles, and the cold air against my bare skin told me I was completely naked before my eyes confirmed it.

I lay on something hard. A table with a smooth surface, and above me a single lamp glared down like a sun with a grudge. I tried to sit up. I could not. The ropes held me flat and the throbbing in my head rolled through me, turning my stomach, so I lay still and waited for the world to stop rocking. I had no idea how long I had been unconscious for. The taste in my mouth, like the bottom of a bottle, said days.

Then I heard voices, muffled, a man's laugh, the murmur of an easy conversation through a wall, and then a woman's voice cutting through it sharp and mean, and everything went quiet.

The silence sat on my chest.

Then footsteps. Measured, unhurried, the step of a man who had probably never had to run from anything. A door opened, and a voice came flat and cold, with the disgust of a man reading a spoiled order:

"Get her on her knees."

It was Emerson.

Two pairs of hands took my arms and hauled me off the table, and my knees hit the floor hard enough to ring through my bones. A palm pressed between my shoulder blades to keep me there, my bound hands hanging in front of me like a guilty prayer. I looked up.

He let my words sit like something he was testing for weight. Then one edge of his mouth turned up, and he looked at me the way a man looks at a broken watch.

"Let us pretend, for a second, that those men forced themselves on you."

Hope was an idiot because it flickered a little.

"Tell me about Blaze."
