Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 539

"I am going to keep this until the day I die."

I did not have a single word for that.

When I told Lucia, she said she had an idea for the next test.

"We humiliate her," Lucia said. "In public, at the party. We bully her and we watch what she does."

"That is a terrible idea."

"Why?"

"Because if I make a scene at Dominic Ford's engagement, I pull every eye in the room, and if Sparrow so much as glances over and sees me doing it, he will have things to say to me that I do not want to hear."

Lucia chewed on that and offered me a smaller version. A quiet corner instead of the main floor, with her three friends standing there to watch and make it a crowd. I reminded her that Scarlett could defend herself, that Scarlett had never in her life stood still for anybody treating her badly, and Lucia took that and gave me the last piece of it.

"Then tell her the truth. Tell her that if she loves you the way she claims, she will do whatever you tell her to do in front of your friends without asking why."

Inside the hotel, Scarlett stood in the lobby and turned a slow circle with her chin lifted.

"Look at this place. Whoever built it knew what they were doing. The sight lines, the lighting, even the way the entrance opens." She touched my arm. "I would like to walk through it and see how they put it together. Stay with your friends. I will not be long."

She walked off toward the far corridor with her heels quiet on the floor, and left me standing there with Lucia and the three women.

Sparrow's men were everywhere. By the doors, by the elevators, at the end of the hall with hands folded in front of them. I counted them without meaning to, the way I had taught myself to count things, and I was halfway around the lobby in my head when Lucia leaned in close to my ear.
