Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 550

So much for the woman who had knelt on the floor to prove she loved me. She had watched the limousine leave and she had gone with it, and tonight I had my answer, the same answer Lucia had been handing me for days. Fine. Good. Then I would stop apologizing for wanting something of my own.

The bathroom door opened.

I lifted my head, ready to smile, but the smile did not come. A man stood in the doorway with a towel knotted at his waist and water still running down his chest, and the face above the towel was not the face from the bar. I knew it before I had finished the thought. The heavy jaw, the flat eyes, the scar that ran up under the ear from the night Sparrow had attacked him.

"Big Bryan."

He smiled, and it was the kind of smile that does not use the eyes. "Hello, caged bird."

I was off the bed before I decided to move. I made it two steps with one hand out for the door, and I had my fingers on the handle when his arm came around my chest from behind and hauled me back against him. I heard the cap come off something, and then the needle went into the side of my neck, quick and sharp and deep, and my whole body went cold from the inside out.

"Shh," he said into my ear, holding me up while my knees went. "You were looking for a man who does not care who you are. Here I am."

The room tilted. The lamp slid sideways and the grey cover of the bed came up toward me, and I could hear the water still running in the bathroom and the bass coming through the wall from the club, and the last thing that came into my head, clear as a photograph, was Scarlett's face at the pool with the wet chain in her fist and the way she had stood between me and Celeste without being asked.

'I am sorry, Scarlett. You were right all along. I should have listened to you.'
