Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 627

CELESTE

The restaurant was all soft gold and candlelight, even in the middle of the afternoon. The tables were spaced so far apart that you could have a breakdown in peace without anyone hearing you. I sat across from Dominic and thought, not for the first time, that my life had become something I used to read about in magazines and roll my eyes at.

He was devastatingly handsome, and he knew it. His charcoal suit fitted him so perfectly it looked painted on, and his crisp white shirt was paired with a tie he had loosened just enough to give him that irresistible, slightly disheveled look. He had picked me up from Helix forty minutes ago, coming straight from his company to take me to lunch. Every woman we had passed in the lobby had tracked him with her eyes like he was the last bottle of water in a desert.

I had made an effort too. I wore a red dress that clung to every curve, my hair swept to one side, and heels that made my legs look like they went on forever. I had dressed for him, of course, but also for every woman who had ever looked at me as though I were the one who had gotten lucky.

Thinking about Seraphine, I almost laughed.

When I'd heard that Ford Biosciences had been vandalized, I'd suspected she would eventually put it up for sale. I knew her well enough to understand that she wouldn't hold on to something that no longer served her purpose.

And I had been right.

When my source told me about the offers, I made sure mine was higher. I hadn't bought Ford Biosciences simply because I wanted to own something that had once belonged to Seraphine.

I had been telling the truth when I told her Dominic wouldn't want his name associated with anything she owned. The mere mention of Seraphine was enough to make him feel disgusted. He despised her, and I couldn't blame him.

Buying the company meant removing whatever connection she had left with Dominic, and I had to admit that I enjoyed the thought of it more than I probably should have.

After all, if Seraphine hadn't slept with Julian, I might never have ended up with Dominic.

The thought made me smile.

It was strange to admit that some of my happiness was connected to the terrible decisions that woman had made. If she hadn't betrayed Dominic and thrown away what they had together, my life might have turned out very differently. I might never have ended up with the man sitting across from me, the man who had somehow become my favourite person in the world.
