Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 629

That was Dominic. He could make even the most boring parts of his day sound like an adventure. He could walk into a burning building and come out telling you about the interesting architecture.

"Do you ever have bad days?" I asked, still giggling.

"Every day I have to spend an hour away from you is a bad day."

"Smooth."

"I meant every word."

"I know you did." I shook my head, smiling. "That's the terrifying part. You're actually like this."

"Like what?"

"You," I said, squeezing his hand. "You're so wonderful that sometimes I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop."

His smile softened, and he reached for my hand again.

"The other shoe isn't going to drop, Celeste. Whatever comes, we face it together. That's the deal."

I nodded, my throat tightening. "That's the deal."

We finished our meal with dessert, sharing a chocolate creation so beautiful that I almost felt guilty eating it. I fed him a bite from my fork, and he watched me with those dark eyes as though I were the only woman in the world.

I wished I could stretch that moment forever, keeping us tucked away in our little pocket of happiness where nothing existed except the two of us and the soft golden light.

But lunch breaks ended.

The thought settled over me like a weight. In less than two weeks, I'd be on my honeymoon. Until then, I had to work twice as hard because Pat's early pregnancy had turned her into a walking nap. She fell asleep at work at least three times a day now, and I couldn't blame her. Her body was building a whole human.

The least I could do was cover for her, let her rest, and make sure everything at Helix ran smoothly before I disappeared into wedded bliss.

I was about to ask Dominic if he would consider spending the rest of the day at Helix with me, just so I could look at him while I worked, when my phone lit up on the table.
