Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 658

Air rushed out of me like I'd been underwater for a minute. So it wasn't Sparrow's. He didn't know. He couldn't know. Yet.

"It's not a lie," I pressed on. "Sparrow really is my husband. Check online if you doubt me. We just had a public wedding."

"I know Sparrow just got married." His jaw worked. "I saw the pictures, but I never paid attention to the wife." He pulled out his phone, tapping fast, and then he made a sound I'd never heard a grown man make in my presence. A strangled little gasp.

"No, this cannot be real. Why would the wife of a man like Sparrow be a prostitute? This makes no sense. I have to confirm the truth myself."

"But I told you, I'm not a prostitute..." I started, and he shushed me, actually shushed me, with a raised finger, and dialed.

I had no idea what he was doing, but I heard him ask for something to be brought over, and he gave the person on the other end our hotel room address.

Then he sat down beside me on the edge of the bed, and his whole manner changed. Softer. Patient. Like a man clearing his desk for a long story.

"Go ahead," he said. "Tell me everything."

So I did.

I didn't hold back anymore. There was no point. I started at the very beginning, the ugliest part.

"I was sold by my own father when I was a baby," I told him, my voice flat and strange in my own ears. "Sold. Like furniture. I grew up in a house where I wasn't allowed to leave, wasn't allowed to have friends, wasn't allowed to be a child. The people I thought were my parents used me as a maid. I scrubbed their floors and cooked their food and took their beatings, and I never set foot in a school. Not once."
