The atmosphere was suffocatingly awkward.
The words caught in Arthur's throat were instantly swallowed down.
Grace shed tears of immense grievance. Amber's mind spun rapidly, analyzing the situation. Before she could speak, her father asked, "Why are you out of class so early today?" He gave a slight shake to the insulated lunchbox in his hand. "Your Aunt Xanthe hasn't had dinner yet. Come on, Amber, let's head in."
Grace blocked his path, her voice tight with one final question. "Do you actually have feelings for her?"
Inside the ward, Xanthe had overheard Arthur and Grace arguing. She pushed herself up from the bed, and just as she leaned heavily against a chair to step out of the room, she heard Grace's question. She froze instantly, the 'Arthur' on the tip of her tongue vanishing.
Arthur looked at Grace—this woman he had poured twelve years of his life into, only to receive endless calculations in return. With profound heartbreak, he declared, "Yes, I do. Are you satisfied?"
Slap! Grace struck Arthur sharply across the face. Amber gasped in fury, stepping forward, as Grace sobbed hysterically, "Arthur Newman, you are a bastard!"
Tears welled in Arthur's eyes. "Yes, I am a bastard. So from now on, please stay far away from this bastard. I wouldn't want to hurt you. Let's go, Amber."
"What is so great about her?! Twelve years, and you finally admit what's been in your heart! I knew it! I knew you had feelings for her all along. All that talk about 'helping a neighbor' was just a lie! I haven't mattered to you for a long time. You're a liar, a massive liar!"
Amber shoved her back. Arthur told Amber to stop, standing completely still as Grace rained punches on his chest.
"How could you do this to me? How have I ever mistreated you? Why are you treating me like this? Do you honestly think I can't live without you?!"
Arthur let out a hollow, agonizing laugh. "Neither of those. I'm just sick of it. I'm tired, I'm annoyed, and I want a change. You ask what's better about her? She doesn't compare to you in a single way, but in my eyes, she's better than you in every way."
"Arthur!"
"Grace, we agreed we were done, so we're done. Didn't you refuse to marry me? Didn't you think you did nothing wrong? Didn't you assume I wouldn't have the guts to leave? Well, perfect. None of that matters anymore. Grace, I don't regret my choice, and I hope you won't regret yours."
"Arthur!"
"How could you ever regret it? I was just your free laborer. You got used to it, and suddenly losing it feels uncomfortable. It's fine. Give it time, you'll get used to it. Grace, don't do things you'll regret. You've always been so proud, so untouchable. Make sure you live up to your own standards."
"Arthur!"
Grace raised her hand to strike again, but Amber blocked her. Just then, Howard stepped out of the elevator, having finished paying the bills. "What's going on? Grace..."
"Get away from me! Don't touch me! Fine, Arthur, you're ruthless. Good for you. Regret? I will never regret this. Just you wait, there will come a day when you're the one crying!" Grace shoved Howard aside and limped furiously back toward her room. As she turned and saw Xanthe standing there, her tear-stained face twisted with absolute disgust. "Don't look so smug. He couldn't possibly have real feelings for you."
Arthur was her pushover.
