Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 92

Instantly, both Joanne and Grace's faces went pale.

She was right. Even if this was Amber's scheme, they had no solid proof. Besides, Joanne’s word wasn't exactly gospel.

The girl still owed her thirty grand, after all.

Damn it, she was definitely changing the subject. But it still didn't add up. Joanne wasn't stupid; if Loretta hadn't pressured her into paying, why would she drop a thousand dollars on a caregiver?

Grace couldn't wrap her head around it. She looked at her son. The mark Arthur had left on his cheek was just as prominent as the one on Amber's. Her heart ached for him. That pushover Arthur had actually hit him that hard!

That wretched girl had slapped her, too. But she hadn't lost out entirely; she had managed to land a slap on Xanthe as well.

"Who says we don't have proof?" Lucian’s aura was menacing as he pointed a finger directly at Xanthe. "She's Loretta’s cousin. Amber, are you really going to play dumb about why she’s here?"

In their past life, Lucian had never cared to listen to Xanthe's backstory, but Amber used to constantly talk about it. She would say how hard Xanthe had it, and how she wanted to help her even if things didn't work out with Arthur.

In this life, Xanthe had shown up by Arthur’s side way earlier. Amber knew that without a massive incentive, Loretta wouldn't lift a finger. And a thousand dollars a day? She barely made a fraction of that doing regular housekeeping.

Moreover, Loretta was the neighborhood troublemaker. Everyone knew that crossing her meant serious drama.

His mom and Joanne didn't want to start trouble, and Amber had banked on exactly that. She had masterfully pulled the rug out from under them.

Grace was stunned. "What? She's Loretta's cousin!?"

Grace suddenly remembered. Years ago, before she had her hooks in Arthur, Loretta used to constantly nag her, saying that if she wasn't going to marry him, she was going to introduce her cousin to him instead.

She’d claim Arthur was hardworking, driven, and knew how to manage a household—making him a perfect match for her sensible cousin.

Grace never imagined that Loretta would play the long game like this. No wonder she had been so sarcastic at the hospital, telling her that whatever Arthur did in his own home was none of her business.

Because he wasn't her husband!

Putting the pieces together, it really had to be Amber pulling the strings.

"If you don't have proof, why drag Xanthe into this? Yes, she's Loretta's cousin. Loretta brought her to the city to find work and asked my dad to look out for her. How is that any of your business?"

"Amber..."

"Either Joanne produces a receipt showing she paid Loretta to prove she's not lying, or your mom calls Loretta right now. Since she’s the key witness, shouldn't we ask her? Otherwise, it just looks like Grace asked Joanne for money, Joanne couldn't pay so she deflected the blame, or Grace enjoyed the pampering and is now refusing to foot the bill."

Lucian clenched his fists so hard his knuckles popped. He knew full well that without evidence, it didn't matter if he was certain Amber was behind this.
