Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 106

Clara was strolling down the street alone with a million "what ifs" popping up in her head.

What if I lose the one I love?

What if I lose everything?

But when she saw Emmett, she was struck dumb, with her words failing her.

"Do you need something?" he asked.

"I...uh..." Clara hesitated, unsure how to broach the topic, when Emmett's phone suddenly rang.

Emmett glanced at her, then said, "Sit tight, I've got stuff to deal with."

"Alright."

Emmett moved off to one side, answering his phone.

Elio's voice came through.

"Mr. Melendez, I've located the woman."

"Really?"

"Yes, but there's a bit of a snag, so it might take some time to bring her over. Can you wait?"

Emmett frowned, "What about my other kid?"

"He'll likely be brought along."

"I can give them three days."

Elio seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, "Alright, I'll bring her to see you in three days."

Emmett hung up and turned to find Clara.

Upon hearing this, Clara quickly said, "You can't blame the Milburn family for this. Even for my sake! Elio's been a huge help to me. He's a good guy and very innocent. You can't do anything to the Milburns over this, okay?"

"You're concerned about Elio."

That ticked him off.

"I'm just helping a friend! Elio and I are just friends! I'll admit that I toyed with the idea of being with him before, but the reason we're not together is because I realized we're better off as friends! And Elio doesn't know I'm married to you! I didn't tell him."

Emmett narrowed his eyes, "Why didn't you tell him? Are you hoping he'll be your backup boyfriend?"

"Absolutely not! I just felt that since we're just friends, there's no need for me to tell him everything. It's as simple as that."

"Really?"

Clara quickly nodded, "Really! I swear, Elio and I are just platonic friends!"
