When Clara arrived at Emmett's place, she barged right in, "Emmett, you can't just—"

The sight before her cut her off mid-sentence.

She saw Alex playing with blocks with Emmett! They were sprawled on the living room floor, engrossed in building some structure. Emmett's brow was furrowed, studying the block in his hand, seemingly deep in thought about his next move.

Hearing her, Emmett looked up, "What's got your panties in a twist?"

"I...," Clara hesitated, at a loss for words.

On seeing Clara, Alex's eyes lit up; he beamed, "Dad, is she the mom you told me about?"

Emmett nodded at Alex, smiling, "Yes, she's gonna be your mom from now on!"

"Mommy!" Alex ran towards Clara, brimming with joy.

This sudden warmth left Clara a bit taken aback.

Did Emmett figure something out?

Emmett had a different take on Clara's dumbfounded expression.

"He's just an affectionate kid! You'll get used to it."

Clara blinked, then awkwardly bent down to pick up Alex.

"So you're Alex?"

"Yes, mommy!" Alex chuckled, "Mommy, you're so pretty; I like you."

Clara couldn't help but laugh.

Alex tilted his head, "Why is mommy your woman, daddy?"

Clara blushed, "Emmett, you can't talk about this in front of the kid!"

Emmett, however, was even more amused, "Because your mom is my wife, so she's my woman, get it?"

"So, if I get married in the future, my wife will be mine, right?" Alex blinked, not quite getting it.

"In theory, yes." Emmett nodded.

Clara warned Emmett, "Don't fill Alex's head with these complicated things; he's still little!"

"He's going to find out about these things sooner or later. As a man, he needs to know how to stake his claim," Emmett said, pulling Clara into his arms, "Clara, you're mine, and nobody can take you away from me."
