Clara took a deep breath, not knowing how to react other than to give a bitter smile.
After a while, Emmett's car pulled up.
As soon as he saw Clara and his mother, he got out of the car and quickly strode over to Clara.
"You're not criticizing my wife again, are you?" he asked.
Sophia looked at her son and avoided his gaze. "No. Ask her if you don't believe me."
"She didn't criticize me; we were just chatting!" Clara quickly responded. "She saw the news and knew I designed the new project, so she was discussing it with me."
Emmett was well aware of his mother's character, and he knew Clara well.
He put his arm around Clara and smiled. "Really? I'm relieved to see you two getting along. Otherwise... I was actually considering moving out with you and the kids. I was worried you might not be comfortable with it."
Clara felt a warm feeling in her heart as she looked at him. She knew what Emmett meant.
Sophia scoffed and left.
Watching her disappear from sight, Clara felt helpless. "You really shouldn't have said that. Your mom has a strong sense of pride. Isn't that like a threat to her?"
"If she didn't pick on you, I wouldn't have said that." Emmett naturally took her hand. "Both you and my mother are important women in my life. If you mistreat her, I won't stand by. The same goes if she mistreats you. If we can't keep things balanced, it means we're not suited to live together."
"Let's not move out yet. At least now we have the grandparents to look after Aiden and Alex, and you can be more at ease."
Clara also desired to move out, seeking to escape Sophia's oppressive behavior.
