"You've totally lost it!" Elio said with a look of disgust. If she hadn't had something on him, he would've thought even looking at her was a waste of time.
How did he not notice how ambitious she was when they were in the family together?
If he had realized it then, he wouldn't be in this mess now.
"Actually, I should thank you! You helped me find a man who's worthy of me." Leah brought it up on purpose.
Elio snorted. He wouldn't dare accept this woman's gratitude.
Leah asked, "Do you think if I tell Clara that you did it on purpose to drive a wedge between her and Emmett, she would still trust you?"
"What... What are you trying to do?"
"I'm not trying to do anything! I just want you to know how much you mean to Clara. She's just using you, but you fell for it."
"No way!"
Leah laughed, picking up the wine glass on the table and taking a sip.
"She never loved you from the start, and you were always the one chasing her. But I can't blame you; compared to Emmett, you do fall short! If I were a woman, I wouldn't choose you either."
"Clara is not the kind of woman you think she is!"
"Oh, what kind is she then? She's so noble in your heart, and I'm like dirt, right?"
"At least you know your place."
"But this noble woman still chose Emmett over you. She knows how much you've done for her over the years! If she had a conscience, how could she reject you?"
