"Knock it off, Elio! Can you let me go?"

When she heard that Emmett was looking for her, her heart seemed to suddenly come alive again. She didn't want to wait any longer; she wanted to see Emmett right now.

But then, Elio burst out laughing, "You don’t actually think Emmett's looking for you to give you a happy life, do you? Check this out."

He handed her his phone.

On it was the rumor about Clara and Elio.

Clara was shocked, "What is this? You and I... how could..."

"This is Leah's doing. If I didn't do it, she would kill my parents. This news caused quite a stir, so Emmett must've seen it! Do you think he, a man who's lived a comfortable life since he was born, would accept being betrayed?"

Clara clenched her fists in anger and said, "Elio, how could you do this to me? I trusted you, and this is what I get!"

"I'm sorry. You can blame me all you want. I accept it. But I really had no other choice! If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I couldn't just sit back and watch my parents die, could I?"

Clara was stunned. She found herself unable to speak.

After a long while, her shoulders slumped in despair as she asked, "Is this photo real?"

"What?"

Elio opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Elio had never seen Clara like this before; her gaze frightened him. "Don't say that, I beg you! I'm not a human, and I'm heartless and ungrateful; I deserve to be punished. Hit me!" With that, Elio grabbed her hand and smacked it against his face.
