Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 375

"This isn't on you, I’m not going to blame you." Emmett gently stroked his hair, "You protected Alex this time, and that warms my heart."

"But I think...I may have caused that woman's death." Aiden said lowly, guilt washing over him.

He had seen the woman bleeding profusely, and he was filled with self-blame.

"Don't sweat it. I won't let her die." Emmett closed his eyes briefly. For a moment, he was tempted to tell his son who the woman was, but he swallowed his words. "Rest well when we get home; it's all in the past now."

"But..."

"It's okay. I told you. I'll make sure the woman makes it!"

"Can I apologize to her in person?"

"Sure thing. I'll take you to see her once she wakes up."

Aiden nodded vigorously, "I want to thank her personally for saving me. Without her, Alex and I might never have seen you again."

Emmett smiled, "Silly boy, why would I let anything happen to you guys?"

Aiden leaned into Emmett, then suddenly sat up again, "What about my mom? Why isn't my mom here?"

At the mention of 'mom', Emmett stiffened. How was he supposed to tell his sons that their mom had run off with another man?

Aiden noticed his discomfort and whispered, "Did I say something wrong again? Did you and mom have a fight? Dad, if my mom upset you, can I apologize for her? Please don't be mad at her."

Emmett frowned, his lips pressed tightly together, "You rest for now. I have other things to deal with. Matt, pull over!"

"Yes, Mr. Melendez."

Emmett gave Aiden's hand a reassuring pat, then turned and got out of the car.
