Rose could easily tell something was amiss and asked hurriedly, "Did the young master give you a hard time again?"
Clara shook her head weakly. "No."
"You're making me more and more curious about what's going on between you two. You're treated so poorly by the butler, and the young master hardly gives you a nod. Why are you so determined to work for the Melendez family? Are you in desperate need of money?"
Clara looked down.
Rose was too naive. She probably wouldn't understand even if Clara tried explaining.
Who could she share her current woes with? Every person who knew about Emmett's situation would pose an additional risk to him!
"Listen," Rose suddenly got up from her bed, reached for her phone and handed it to Clara. "Although the butler strictly forbade anyone from lending you a phone, I can't bear to see you in such a state. Use it! If the butler finds out, the worst-case scenario is I'll leave the Melendez family."
Clara hesitated as she looked at the phone.
She wanted to leave, but if she did, she would have to contact Elio, pulling him back into this whole mess.
She didn't want to, nor did she want to disrupt Elio's life any further.
Her past dealings had already caused him enough trouble, even leading him to have some unwarranted thoughts.
Including Rose, she felt responsible for all of them.
After all, all of this was her fault.
Clara gently pushed the phone back, "Thank you, but I don't need it. I don't really have anyone to contact."
"Don't you want to find someone who can rescue you?" Rose looked puzzled. "Isn't that why the young master forbade everyone from lending you a phone? He's afraid you'll seek outside help. Now you have the chance, why not use it? Don't worry about me. I'm still young. I can find a new place even if I leave the Melendez family."
Clara managed a weak smile, "You're too kind, but I can't drag you into this."
