Their squabbling caught the attention of a passing Sophia. Her brows furrowed as she approached them.
The butler quickly bowed and reported, "The young master claims she stole from us and asked me to search her."
"No! Emmett didn't say that, he made it up."
"Slap!"
Before Clara could even finish her sentence, Sophia's slap had already met her cheek.
Immediately, a red handprint surfaced on her face, and she was momentarily dazed from the blow.
"Do you not hear the butler and I speaking? What business is it of a servant to interrupt? Who do you think you are, Mrs. Melendez?"
Upon hearing this, the butler became even more smug, "She's been denying it all along, wouldn't let me search her. She insists that the young master is falsely accusing her!"
Sophia glanced disdainfully at Clara, then held out her hand, "Hand it over! Don't wait until I really get serious. You know I don't want you seeing my son anymore. If you hand it over now, I can downplay this situation. But if you refuse to admit your mistakes, then I can't interfere with how my son handles you!"
"I really didn't take anything! I haven't touched a thing. I haven't even been in the living room today. I've been in the backyard all day pruning the shrubs. The most expensive piece of equipment I've handled is a pair of pruning shears. You can check if they're missing."
Clara covered her cheek, the burning pain causing her to grimace.
She knew her cheek must be swelling again.
Every time Sophia hit her, it seemed like she was using all her strength. It was clear that she really despised Clara!
"Then explain to me, why would my son suspect you?"
