Leah was on the verge of giving Emmett a piece of her mind, but time was slipping through her fingers like grains of sand.
"Enough with the blame game!" She snapped. "Hurry up and think of something, will you? Can't we salvage this situation at all? At the very least, we can't let Emmett die!"
Newell fell silent for a few seconds before he spoke, a note of resignation in his voice. "The only thing I can think of is to give him all the antidote, let him detox completely."
Detox completely?
Leah hesitated.
Without the leverage of the poison, would Clara still dance to her tune?
Would they not just end up back in each other's arms?
And if Clara spilled the beans to Emmett about everything, Leah could kiss her dreams of being Mrs. Melendez goodbye – that was if she even had a chance of coming out of this alive!
"No way! That's not going to work. If I give him the antidote, sure, he'll live, but my whole plan goes down the drain!"
"Hah! You just want to use this as leverage for more gain, don't you? Don't think I don't know about the ten percent share I gave you. You've already gambled away a fortune!"
Newell's voice dropped to a cold growl, "You're making me unhappy with that talk. I haven't even asked you for money, and here you are, suspecting me! Besides, that share is mine now. How I spend it is my business, isn't it?"
"It is your business, but let me tell you, if Emmett dies, neither of us is getting out of this smelling like roses! You'd better think of something, whether you want to or not! Even if I'm exposed, even if the Melendez family finds out I was behind the poison, they can't do a thing to me because they need me for the antidote!"
Unfazed, Newell retorted, "Only from you? Don't forget, I'm still here, alive and kicking!"
