Clara's heart felt like it was hammering against her chest, threatening to break free.
It wasn't until they reached the side of the highway that Leah dared to speak. "You better start moving, Clara. Make sure you're back before the streetlights flicker on, or else..."
She didn't need to finish for Clara to understand the gravity of her warning. "Or else you won't give him the antidote. I get it, Leah; you don't have to keep threatening me. I won't forget," Clara snapped back, already turning on her heel to leave.
Leah watched her go, a frown creasing her brow.
Everything hinged on this moment. She wondered if Elio would be willing to help, let alone capable.
This was far from easy.
...
At the hospital.
Emmett and Ricardo had just wrapped up a meeting. Emmett thought he could use some fresh air but before he could even swing his legs off the bed, a sudden darkness clouded his vision.
He stumbled backward, his body crashing against the wall with a thud.
This was the first time he had experienced such a disorienting spell since he fell ill.
The onset of his condition was strange, to say the least. It had started shortly after Clara left. Could it be that he was really losing his health because he was thinking too much about Clara?
"You don't look like lying down will fix anything," Sophia insisted, guiding him back to sit on the edge of the bed. "If you're feeling unwell, tell me right away. Don't try to spare your father and me the worry. You're our only child. What would we do if something happened to you?"
Emmett offered a weak smile. "Don’t make a fuss, Mom. I'm okay."
Once she sat down, Emmett hesitated before asking, "Mom, when you first met Leah, did she approach you, or did you strike up the conversation?"
Sophia blinked, puzzled by the question. "Why do you ask?"
"Just curious. It's not like we have much else to talk about," he said casually.
"It was me. I approached her first," Sophia recalled, thinking back to that day. "I was buying pastries for the kids, and there were only a few left. Leah bought them all. So I asked and she offered me a few without even charging me. That's how we got to know each other."
