"Mark my words, the day I become Mrs. Melendez is the day you get the hell out of here!"
Leah, fuming with indignation, spun on her heel and stormed off.
Behind her, Rose spat in disgust, "What a piece of work! She struts in here like she owns the place. What on earth does Mrs. Sophia see in her, huh? And those boys—how on earth did they end up with a mother like her? She's like a stain on a perfect tapestry!
...
Leah scoured the Melendez mansion for Clara, but Clara was nowhere to be found, and even the butler seemed clueless.
After a fruitless search, Leah had no choice but to head back to her room.
As she reached her door, someone suddenly clamped a hand over her mouth from behind.
Startled, Leah was about to scream when a familiar voice whispered, "What took you so long? It's me, don't yell!"
She spun around to find Clara hiding behind her.
"What are you doing here? I've been looking everywhere for you."
Clara rolled her eyes and said, "You promised you'd get me out of here. I've been waiting forever. You never showed, so I had no choice but to lurk around your room, hoping you'd show up."
Leah grabbed her hand urgently. "We need to go now. I can't deal with this mess anymore. You'll have to go to Elio yourself and see if he'll help."
"Fine, just get me out of here. Hey, can you get me a cell phone? I can't reach Elio without one. Emmett confiscated mine. There’s nothing I could do without one."
Leah hesitated before nodding, "Okay. Once you're out, pick up a phone at 355 Liberty Avenue. They'll have one ready for you, then you can contact Elio."
Clara was squeezed into an outfit that was a far cry from her usual attire and it felt awkward...
"Can I really go out in this? Isn't this a bit too revealing?"
"Are you really worried about that now? Getting out is what matters!" Leah scowled at her. "Hurry up and stay close to me!"
Clara nodded, adjusted the low neckline of her dress, and followed Leah out the door.
Thankfully, Leah had the foresight to change Clara's clothes and apply some makeup.
When they reached the entrance, they bumped into Matt, who merely glanced at them without recognizing Clara.
They finally left the Melendez Mansion with no one noticed.
