Leah furrowed her brow, a sinking feeling in her heart. It was clear she needed to be more vigilant.
Emmett had started to doubt whether she was truly the biological mother of Aiden and Alex. Just today, he had asked about the past, and she hadn't been able to give him a single straight answer!
As she pondered, Leah decided she would have to grill Clara as soon as she got back. What exactly had happened all those years ago? She couldn't afford to miss a single detail!
...
Sophia left Leah's room and strolled through the backyard.
She glanced at the bustling maids, her forehead creasing with annoyance. Raising her hand, she beckoned the butler over. "Tell me, where's Clara? I haven't seen her around."
The butler turned and searched the area. "I'm not sure where she's gotten to. Today she claimed she had a stomachache and went back to her room, but when I checked on her earlier, she wasn't there..."
"Could she have run off?" Sophia said gravely. "Let me make one thing clear: you must find Clara. We can't let her slip away from here!"
"Of course, of course..."
Sophia took a deep breath. "As much as I dislike having her around, Emmett is being discharged from the hospital tomorrow, and the first thing he'll want is to see Clara. What will you tell him if she's missing? I won't be able to cover for you then!"
The butler nodded quickly. "Rest assured, Mrs. Sophia, I'll start searching for her immediately. She'll be back before you know it!"
