Was Emmett getting discharged and coming home tomorrow?
Clara blinked in surprise before nodding quickly, "Okay, got it."
The butler gave her a stern look before he left.
Clara clenched the cell phone in her pocket, the one she hadn’t returned yet.
First off, she was running out of time because Leah had told her she must be back before nightfall.
Secondly, she had her own reasons; she wanted to use it to contact her son, to see his face a few more times before she might have to leave the Melendez estate for good, especially once Elio found the antidote to save Emmett. Who knew when she’d see her kids again.
And of course, it was also easier to stay in touch with Elio.
But she would see Emmett tomorrow.
That thought alone was the brightest spot in her recent days. Emmett was coming back, and she’d get to see him one last time before she left. That was enough for her!
...
As the evening drew in, Sophia arrived at the hospital with Leah and the two kids in tow.
As soon as they entered, Alex rushed to Emmett with the same enthusiasm as always.
"Daddy! I missed you so much! You haven't been home, and my grades are slipping, all because I haven't seen you!"
Emmett, somewhat exasperated, tapped his son's forehead lightly. "If your grades are slipping, that's the issue—no excuses!"
Aiden chimed in from the side, "Alex really has been missing you, Dad. He wakes up at night sometimes, saying he needs to find Daddy and Mommy."
Alex quickly plastered a smile on his face, "Ms. Calloway's really, really patient when she plays with us!"
"You don't know the half of it! Leah's been spending most of her time with the kids lately," Sophia added at the perfect moment, passing over a thermos. "Here, try this. Leah made it herself!"
"Well then, I really must give it a taste," Emmett said as he took the thermos.
This action made both Aiden and Alex frown, each pondering if Daddy was actually considering accepting Leah.
Before, they were sure Daddy would never end up with Leah, which is why they had freely orchestrated their plans.
But now, watching the interactions between them, it seemed things weren't as they had initially thought.
Leah stood by, head bowed, the picture of meekness—a stark contrast to the confident woman they knew from the Melendez estate.
