"But I never intended to trap her like this," Elio muttered, running his fingers through his hair in frustration before plopping down on the front steps.
Silence hung in the air.
"I always dreamed that Clara and I would fall for each other naturally, that she'd like me, I'd like her, and then we'd settle into a quiet life. With Alex and Aiden, or maybe even with a couple of kids of our own down the line. But now, her heart's all about Emmett! Where does that leave me? Even if she's with me now, when will I ever truly be in her heart?"
"I think you can't rush her into having feelings for you. You'll be living together, day in, day out, forever and a day. She'll come around to you eventually!"
Nestor sat down beside him, exhaling deeply. "Sir, you're too close to the situation to see it clearly. And I know you've always had a soft heart, never wanting to do anything that goes against your morals."
Elio sighed, knowing Nestor was right.
If he was a little more ruthless, he could've claimed Clara for himself! What would that make of Emmett?
"But what you're doing now isn't against your morals. Remember when you called Newell yourself to save Emmett? That was a good deed in itself. And if you and Clara end up together, wouldn't that also be a good deed, helping Leah and Emmett find their way?"
"What kind of good deed is that? They don't even love each other! Look, I'll lay it out for you – I don't think Leah is truly in love with Emmett. She's just attracted to how outstanding he is."
Nestor chuckled. "Whether Leah truly loves Emmett or not isn't important to you. What you need to focus on is protecting your own love, making Clara willingly come back to you."
Elio let out another sigh. How much he wished it were that simple!
"Look at the life you're living now. You wake up thinking of Clara, and you go to sleep thinking of her. So why not pull a few strings and have her with you? Waking up to see her every morning sounds like a pretty good deal to me."
