“Look, it’s not like I have a choice, okay? I’m just sticking to the plan. Once I marry into the Melendez family, I’ll have free reign. And guess what? I’ve been glued to them, not even a text to you, let alone leaving their sight. I do need a favor though—a big one. You wouldn’t happen to know someone who can handle paternity tests, would you?”
“Paternity tests?” Mr. Quintin paused, his voice laced with confusion. “Why would I know anything about that? I don’t have kids!”
“But can you find someone for me? It’s important.”
“What’s going on? You are trying to marry Emmett and now you need a DNA test? Don’t tell me you’re carrying Emmett’s baby!”
“No way! Emmett and I haven't even... you know. How could I be pregnant? Get your mind out of the gutter! The only man I’ve been with is you!”
There was a sigh on the other end of the line, a note of resignation in Mr. Quintin’s voice. “Leah, sooner or later, you’ll belong to someone else. Why don’t you just drop Emmett and come back to me? Whatever you want, it’s yours. No more struggling, okay? There’s no guarantee with him, but with me, you’d be the undisputed lady of the Quintin family. My folks won’t object.”
Leah frowned. “Haven’t I made myself clear? We’re done.”
“Then why the hell are you calling me?”
“Because you still want a piece of the Melendez fortune, right? Once I’m in, you’ll get your cut. I’ve explained this before. You’re not getting any younger. Find a new girlfriend and stop waiting for me. We can be friends, nothing more.”
Mr. Quintin's voice deepened. “So you’ve made up your mind about Emmett? Even if he doesn’t love you, even if it doesn’t work out, you’re still willing?”
“If he’s with me, I’ll make it work. No man has ever escaped my grasp. If I want him to fall for me, he will.”
