After a while, Rose got up and freshened up in the bathroom.

Clara, half-asleep, seemed to drift off, yet not quite succumbing to slumber.

Suddenly, there came a knock on the door, rousing Clara to full alertness. She sat up swiftly and asked, "What's up?"

"How can you still be sleeping? Mr. Melendez has been discharged from the hospital and is back home. He's asking for you!"

Emmett wanted to see her?

Clara blinked in confusion, then got to her feet and replied, "Alright, I'll get ready in a moment."

"Hurry up!" The butler's voice was stern, and he cast her a suspicious glance before leaving. "I don't know what sort of spell you've cast on Mr. Melendez. The moment he returns, he demands to see you!"

Muttering to himself, he walked away, leaving Clara with a bitter smile tugging at her lips. Emmett hadn't let go of her yet, but what could she do about the poison coursing through his veins?

She couldn't just stand by and watch him die, no matter how much it hurt to leave.

The car carrying Emmett pulled up to the Melendez estate, and Sophia and Patrick came out to greet him.

They had intended to pick him up from the hospital, but Emmett had insisted that there was no need for such fuss over a non-celebration.

"Oh, my dear son, you're finally home! You must take better care of yourself from now on. We won't be going through that ordeal again!"

Sophia clutched Emmett's hand tenderly, massaging it gently.

Patrick examined Emmett with a critical eye. "Hmm, you look much better now than you did in the hospital. Your mother and I were so worried, seeing you all pale and drawn. From now on, you have to follow the doctor's orders. Eat well, and sleep well. No matter how busy you are with the company, your health comes first!"
