"Did Emmett send for you again?" Sophia frowned deeply, an edge of irritation lacing her voice. "Out with it! Have you been conspiring with Emmett behind my back? How could he possibly still want anything to do with you after everything? You know very well what you've done! Can't you just leave him be?"
Clara tugged at her lips awkwardly. "I'm sorry, but I was indeed asked to come. I didn't want to... If you prefer, I can tell Emmett I'm leaving right now!"
"What's this? Are you trying to threaten me?"
Clara shook her head. "Of course not, I couldn't possibly threaten you. It's just that you must know I don't have much say here anymore. Unlike before, when Emmett would actually listen to me, what can I do now as nothing more than a maid?"
"Hmph! Your doings are none of my concern, but let me warn you, don't you dare get any funny ideas. If you cross the line, I won't let you off easy!"
Sophia was clearly indignant, yet she was careful not to stir the pot further.
After all, she knew Emmett's temper better than anyone and didn't want to sour their relationship over a woman like Clara.
"Enough, off you go. I just wanted to make it crystal clear that Emmett now sees you purely as a maid! Don't even dream of becoming the lady of this house again. I suggest you stop that fantasy right now, or you'll be the one who suffers in the end!"
Clara hung her head in silence.
Sophia huffed and turned on her heel, leaving the room.
...
Standing before Emmett's door, Clara hesitated before knocking gently.
A somewhat feeble voice emerged from inside, "Come in."
Upon seeing Clara, Emmett arched an eyebrow and asked, "Do you know why I called for you?"
Clara kept her gaze firmly on the ground, not daring to look at Emmett. "I don't know."
