"I'm just worried that because of her, things between you and Emmett could sour, and then it'll be harder for me to play matchmaker later on," Sophia confided with a sigh, her voice underlining her concerns. "Just keep this between us, okay?"
Leah nodded understandingly. "Absolutely, Sophia. I won't bring it up again."
"It's not that I'm blaming you," Sophia quickly clarified, her tone softening. "You and I both can't stand Clara. Once you're married into the Melendez family and settling down with Emmett, you'll raise those kids right. And we won't mention Clara again, acting as if Emmett never knew her."
Leah nodded in agreement. "I get it, don't worry. Although I dislike Clara, I do appreciate that she was kind to my kids. They wouldn't be so attached to her otherwise."
Sophia looked at Leah, her face showing a trace of concern at Leah's pale complexion. She frowned slightly.
"You think she genuinely loved those kids? Let me tell you, there's a scheme behind it all, so don't be fooled by her act. When she first came around, I didn't see the problem, thinking she was getting on quite well with the children, and like you, I felt relieved. But then I realized things weren't quite right. How could a stepmother possibly have genuine affection for the children? Plus, I looked into her background; she’s got a father who's addicted to gambling. If I'm not wrong, she lured in Emmett to get her hands on some money to clear her father's debts. Sure, the Melendez family is well off, but that doesn't mean we're eager to throw our money away on lost causes!"
Leah raised an eyebrow, intrigued. She had been unaware of Clara’s history.
No wonder Sophia couldn't stand her!
