Matthew and Ethan listened quietly, their expressions growing increasingly serious, their eyes darkening like still water.
“Arabella, you’re practically a natural at investing!” Ethan said with genuine admiration. If her insights didn’t come from years of handson experience, then it could only be pure, raw talent.
And given how young Arabella was–and the fact that she’d never actually worked in finance–Ethan could only chalk it up to exactly that: talent.
It was only after she finished speaking that Arabella realized she’d let herself get drawn into the discussion without thinking.
She couldn’t shake the feeling of being carefully watched, and it made her a little uneasy.
“You know about investing?” Matthew looked at her thoughtfully, his gaze intent.
Arabella forced a light smile. “Not really. I’ve just caught some financial news here and there–you know, the kind with analysts breaking things down.”
“Then you really are a natural. It’s just…” Matthew paused.
Arabella felt a twinge of tension. “Just what?”
Why did he have to pause like that? It put her on edge.
“That kind of instinct reminds me of someone,” Matthew went on, his tone even.
Arabella’s heart gave a small jump.
Ethan glanced at Matthew, then murmured, “You mean…”
Matthew gave a slight nod. “Yeah. Marla.”
Ethan’s eyes widened in recognition. “Now that you mention it, there is a similarity.”
As if he’d just made a fascinating discovery, Ethan turned to Arabella, his voice excited. “You know, Arabella, you should really consider studying finance properly. Who knows–you might even give Marla a run for her money someday.”
The tightness in Arabella’s chest finally eased.
Of course.
Matthew had brought up Marla again.
Keeping her smile easy, Arabella shrugged playfully. “I don’t think I have the bandwidth for that right now. I should really focus on getting the pharma company and the new production line up and running first. Can’t let Dad and Grandpa down.”
‘Just throwing it out there,” Ethan said with a casual wave.
Matthew, though, raised an eyebrow. “You might want to think about it. Who knows–maybe you and Marta will cross paths one day.”
His words felt weighted, almost like a test, and Arabella couldn’t help the flicker of unease.

Hearing Matthew talk about possibly meeting Marla, Ethan let out a regretful sigh. “That person is way too lowprofile. I’ve tried reaching out a few times but hit dead ends every time. Nobody even seems to know what she looks like.”
“All I’ve heard is that she’s a woman,” Matthew said.
Ethan looked genuinely surprised. “Marla is a woman?”
No wonder his own inquiries had gone nowhere–he’d been looking in entirely the wrong direction. It had never crossed his mind that the legendary investor could be a woman.
He smacked his forehead lightly. “Wow, I feel slow. I guess no one ever actually said Marla had to be a man.”
“Ethan, like you said–she’s incredibly private. So it’s totally normal not to know something like that,” Arabella chimed in, deliberately avoiding Matthew’s penetrating gaze and offering Ethan a warm, reassuring smile.
She spoke as if Marla were just a character from a story–someone completely detached from her own life.
Matthew’s eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. For some reason, he couldn’t shake this strange hunch.
Arabella’s take on investing really did echo Marla’s style in certain ways.
But she was a doctor, trained by the renowned Aletta, with no visible ties to finance…
“Mr. Stewart, you haven’t ordered yet, right? What would you like? Lunch is on me today,” Arabella said, smoothly passing the menu to Matthew, hoping to steer the conversation elsewhere.
If he kept looking at her like that much longer, even her steady nerves might fray. It felt like he was moments away from seeing right through her.
This guy was just too sharp–always connecting dots from the tiniest clues.
Matthew accepted the menu and began browsing the selections.
Maybe he was overthinking it. Ethan was brilliant at investing; maybe Arabella had just absorbed some things from being around him.
Besides, both she and Marla were women–it wasn’t so strange for them to approach things differently than a man might.
Watching Matthew order without bringing up Marla again, Arabella felt a quiet wave of relief.
“Ethan, Naomi’s birthday party is coming up. You haven’t picked out a gift yet, have you?” Arabella asked, shifting the topic firmly
