"Fine."
"You forced my hand."
She returned the phone, then leaned in close to Lauren and whispered her plan.
Lauren's expression turned grim. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
Cynthia stared back coldly.
Lauren gritted her teeth and finally nodded.
"Okay."
"We'll give it a shot."

Meanwhile, by the time Seraphina left Lexington Law Associates, it was nearly time for preschool to let out. She checked her watch and drove straight to pick up Lily.
But when she arrived, the teacher looked surprised to see her. "Lily has already been picked up."
Seraphina stopped dead in her tracks. "Picked up by whom?"
The teacher blinked in confusion. "The woman said she was family, and Lily seemed to know her, so we just assumed..."
Seraphina didn't hear the rest. She quickly pulled out her phone and dialed her daughter's smartwatch, but it rang endlessly with no answer.
Her chest tightened in panic as she called their nanny.
"Is Lily home?"
The nanny sounded puzzled. "No, Mrs. Lockwood. I didn't go pick her up today; I thought you were handling it."
Seraphina's brow furrowed deeply. She immediately called Dominic.
He picked up on the first ring. "Seraphina?"
"Did you pick Lily up?"
He paused. "No, I've been at the office all day."
