"No..."
"No nothing! I already bought it. If you don't take it, it's useless and will just sit on my desk collecting dust. It only has value if you keep it."
Seeing the stubborn glint in his eyes, Seraphina smiled helplessly and carefully tucked the stone into her bag. "Alright, I'll keep it. Thank you, Dean Vance."
Satisfied, a huge grin broke across his face. He looked at her exactly as a proud father would look at his own daughter, brimming with unconcealed joy and affection.
Just then, another campus cart drove over from the main building.
The cart stopped, and Dominic stepped out first, followed closely by Cynthia.
As she stepped down, her gaze casually swept over the scene.
She froze completely.
Seraphina was standing beneath the sycamore trees, clutching a stack of gifts to her chest, while Dean Vance stood in front of her, smiling brightly as he chattered away.
Cynthia's fingernails dug brutally into her palms, her body swaying slightly.
It wasn't someone with the same name.
It was actually her.
Dean Vance's precious gifts had been meant for Seraphina all along!
Cynthia ground her back teeth together, the elegant mask of indifference slipping from her face.
Dean Vance turned his head and noticed they had arrived.
Dominic was currently staring at Seraphina with a gaze that was cold and entirely detached, like he was looking at a stranger.
Dean Vance's face darkened in disgust before he turned back to Seraphina, his warm smile instantly returning.
"Seraphina, I believe in you. Take things one step at a time."
He spoke loud enough for everyone around them to hear perfectly.
Seraphina's lips curved up slightly. "I will. Thank you."
"I'll be going now, Dean Vance." She said her goodbyes and began walking toward the gates.
From start to finish, she didn't cast a single glance in Dominic's direction.
Cynthia stared at the scene with venom in her eyes. She remembered now—Seraphina had indeed taken nuclear research courses back in the day.
But to think her luck was this good? To be remembered so fondly by Dean Vance? To be treated this well?
Taking a deep breath, a cynical smirk touched his lips. "That's just the kind of person she is. But people like her never make it far. Unlike you, who relies on actual talent."
Cynthia lowered her eyes modestly. "You flatter me."
She looked unusually shy and delicate. Dominic's Adam's apple bobbed as he reached out to hold her hand.
"Don't sell yourself short. You have always been the best."
"Oh, Dominic..."
For a moment, their eyes met, overflowing with deep affection.
It wasn't until Seraphina's figure completely disappeared from view that Dean Vance finally looked their way again.
Turning around to see Dominic and Cynthia holding hands, his smile vanished, replaced by a deep scowl of utter revulsion.
Dominic instinctively dropped Cynthia's hand.
Dean Vance let out a disgusted huff, waved his hand dismissively, and walked away.
Cynthia clenched her fists, desperately pushing down her raging emotions, and bowed her head. "Dominic, this is all my fault. I made the Dean misunderstand you."
