Dominic remained completely silent, staring down at the amber liquid swirling in his glass, his eyes drowning in pure agony.
...
It was late into the night.
Dominic walked out of the club alone, standing on the vibrant, neon-lit streets.
He looked up at the endless sea of city lights, and his mind drifted back to years ago when Seraphina used to stand at their front door, waiting for him to come home with that beautiful, radiant smile.
Back then, he only ever found her annoying.
But now, he would trade everything he owned just to get back the woman whose entire world used to revolve around him.
A painful lump formed in Dominic's throat.
He finally understood that some wounds were so deep they could never be undone.
But asking him to completely let go of Seraphina? That was impossible.
As the thought settled, he slowly clenched his fists, the torment in his eyes shifting into an unshakeable resolve.
If Seraphina refused to forgive him, he wouldn't force her.
But he would never give up on protecting her.
Even if she never looked back, he was willing to stay in the shadows, quietly shielding her from any danger that came her way.
Dominic looked up at the pitch-black sky. "Seraphina, I won't let anyone hurt you ever again."
Even if the man she ultimately chose would never be him.
...
Two months later, outside the Northport Women's Penitentiary.
The Sinclair family was already waiting.
Clara had woken up at the crack of dawn, dressing in brand-new clothes. She kept asking Arthur if her hair was messy, terrified that her daughter would see her looking haggard the moment she walked out.
Arthur kept telling her to relax, but from the second he stepped out of the car, his eyes had been glued to those heavy, locked gates.
Zach hadn't spoken a single word, his knuckles white as he gripped the coat he brought for his sister.
Watching her family, Seraphina felt a thick knot form in her throat.
A full ten years.
They had finally made it to this day.
Just then, the heavy iron gates of the prison began to slowly groan open.
A thin, fragile silhouette stepped out from the shadows.
The woman was dressed in simple clothes, her hair cut short, her face far more weathered than any of them remembered.
It only took one glance for Seraphina's tears to spill over.
