Camille shot up from her chair. The legs scraped against the café floor, making a sharp, grating sound.

Fighting back tears, she grabbed her purse, muttered, “I have somewhere to be,” and stormed out of the café.

Natalie quickly followed. The only ones left were Elena and Sophia.

Sophia rolled her eyes toward Camille’s exit, then turned to Elena with a bright smile. “Pretty good, huh? I handled that one.”

Gone was the spoiled brat from the jewelry store. Today, Sophia was sharp, smooth, and on Elena’s side.

Elena chuckled. “Thanks for stepping in.”

She was supposed to marry Alexander. With the Kingsleys‘ resources, it wouldn’t be hard for them to dig up her background. Sophia clearly knew everything–and she’d still backed Elena

“No big deal. You’re basically Alexander’s wife now. We’re family. I’ve got your back.”

From now on, anyone messing with Elena would have to answer to Sophia. Elena’s heart warmed slightly. She pressed her lips together for a beat, then pulled out the small gift box she’d just tucked into her purse and slid it across the table.

“This is too much. I can’t accept it.”

“Why not? It’s not even that expensive.”

“I’m planning to call off the engagement.”

Sophia’s eyes widened. Elena had felt seen and defended for the first time in a while–but she couldn’t pretend. She needed to be honest.

“I’m guessing that’s why you invited me here today. Do me a favor–pass the message to Alexander. We’re not a good match.”

Sophia looked crushed. “But if you walk away, you won’t be able to inherit Malcolm’s estate…”

“I’ll talk to the lawyer,” Elena said. “If there’s truly no other option, then the inheritance can go to charity. It’s not the end of the world.”

She’d already been through one failed relationship. She wasn’t going to walk blindly into another one just because it was convenient.

“Can I at least ask why?”

Sophia still looked unconvinced. Elena didn’t hesitate. “He’s a player.”

“Pfft-” Sophia choked, spitting her coffee everywhere.

Eyes wide, she stared at Elena in disbelief. Elena calmly handed her a napkin. “What’s wrong?”

“Player? Are we talking about the same guy? Alexander? He’s the definition of emotionally constipated. He’s never even had a girlfriend.”

Sophia couldn’t wrap her head around it. That word and Alexander just didn’t go together.

Elena, unbothered, stared out the window. Men were good at pretending.

For five years, she’d believed Nathan was the perfect husband. Turned out, her marriage license was fake and he’d been lying to her the entire time.

“Polished on the outside, cold and distant. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he smokes, drinks, and has three secret girlfriends.”

It was a savage assessment.

Sophia opened her mouth, then shut it. There was no way to fight that level of suspicion.

“Anyway, thank you again for today. Just let Alexander know–I’ve got somewhere to be.”

Sophia didn’t try to stop her. But she knew this misunderstanding had to be cleared up fast.

After leaving the café, Elena met with a rental agent. He showed up in under twenty minutes, eager to help. But the apartment he brought her to wasn’t the one she’d found online.

“This isn’t the one I asked about.”

She glanced up at the sign. Grandcrest Residences. A luxury complex. The kind of place where even a tiny one–bedroom cost six figures.

“I can’t afford this.”

The agent smiled quickly, trying to explain. “Right, sorry–someone grabbed that other unit right before you called. But since you mentioned you’re looking for a long–term lease, I thought of this place. The owner’s moving overseas for a few years, and he just wants someone clean and reliable to stay here.
