The agent patted his chest like he was swearing an oath. Elena raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”
He froze for a second, then quickly covered the flicker of guilt in his eyes with a smile. “Didn’t I already explain? The owner only has two conditions: must be a woman, and must keep the place clean. He spent a lot on the furniture, but that’s it. You? Young, polished, clearly responsible. You’re perfect. I already talked to him–he’s fine with it. Want to go ahead and sign the lease now?”
His tone made it sound like he was terrified she might change her mind and walk away.
Elena narrowed her eyes, glancing down at the contract. She didn’t reach for it.
Instead, she calmly pulled a hidden camera detector from her bag–right in front of the agent.
The man’s face twitched. “Uh…”
“Can’t be too careful,” Elena said with a smile, then walked off to inspect the apartment again. This time, she checked every corner thoroughly–especially the bedroom and bathroom.
No hidden devices. Too many creeps out there. Better safe than sorry.
Once she was confident the place was clean, she tucked the detector back into her purse, then finally reached for the contract and signed it. She paid three months‘ rent upfront.
“How should I send over future payments?” she asked.
“I’ll send you the owner’s WhatsApp.”
“Sounds good.”
He forwarded the contact right away. The profile photo was a husky, tongue out, looking ridiculous. The display name was completely blank.
Out of courtesy, Elena sent a short message.
“Hi, I’m renting your apartment. I’ll send the rent on the 15th of each month–does that work for you?”
She didn’t wait for a reply. After the agent left, she ran out to a nearby store, grabbed cleaning supplies and essentials, and spent the next few hours wiping everything down and reorganizing the space.
By the time she was done, the sky had gone dark. She stepped out onto the balcony.

Golden light spilled across the horizon, the last bit of sun dipping below the buildings. For the first time in days, something in her chest loosened.
She was finally out of that house. Away from the cold glares, the fake smiles, the suffocating drama. Her phone buzzed.
A message from Nathan. “Why aren’t you home yet?”
Two hours earlier, he’d sent another one. “If you didn’t want to let Camille take the interview, you could’ve just said so.”
Elena let out a cold laugh. She changed her shoes, grabbed her keys, and headed out. Time to go back–for one last scene.
She stopped for dinner first, made sure she was full. She didn’t want to deal with whatever was coming on an empty stomach.
By the time she pulled up to the Hawthorne estate, it was late. The second she stepped through the door, a cup flew toward her feet.
Elena’s reflexes kicked in, and she stepped back just in time. She looked up slowly.
Victor and Victoria were sitting there. So were Camille and Nathan.
And she caught it–the split–second moment where Nathan pulled his hand off Camille’s shoulder.
“You’ve got some nerve showing up,” Victoria snapped. “You knew Sophia, and you never told us?”
Her voice rose. “And then you go whispering crap about Camille behind her back? If you didn’t want her to take the interview, just say it. Don’t go playing games.”
Victor piled on. “You keep secrets from us, you badmouth Camille, and now you think you can waltz back in here like nothing happened?”
He already didn’t like Elena to begin with. After she exposed the affair he was hiding, Victoria had blown up at him for days. He’d never forgiven her for that.
Elena stood in the entryway, eyes scanning all four of them. And then she smiled.
“What the hell are you smiling at?” Victoria barked.
“You think everyone’s as stupid as you.” It was like she’d thrown a grenade.
“You–what did you say?” Victoria couldn’t believe her ears.

Was this really the same Elena who used to tiptoe around the house, never talked back, always trying to please?
