Chapter 405 Nightmare

Riona made no attempt to hide her disgust as she laid into Camille. Now everyone across Northbridge and Astryn is mocking the Sterling family for taking you in. Our brand new business ventures in Northbridge haven’t even gotten off the ground, and we’re already the town’s biggest joke–all thanks to you.”
Camille’s cheeks burned hot with shame. She’d never expected warm care from Riona or Zoe, yet she’d never imagined they’d come just to kick her while she was down. Worse still, she had no retort to fire back. She could only force a weak, shaky smile, terrified the Sterlings would cast her out entirely.
“Quit straining that fake grin if you can’t pull it off. It looks dreadful,” Riona said flatly. “Rest and heal here. I’ll handle all the vicious gossip swirling around town.”
She pulled a gold credit card out of her brand–new Hermès handbag and held it out to Camille. “Keep this for emergencies. Your recovery is the top priority, understand?”
Camille stared at the card, stunned and overwhelmed, too hesitant to reach for it at first.
“Take it,” Riona’s tone turned sharp with irritation. “Don’t be so awkward and reserved.”
Awkward and reserved. That was the exact label they’d once stuck on Elena. Camille never thought she’d be the one hearing those words now, but this was no time to dwell on the insult. She quickly reached out and took the card from her hand.
She barely had a cent to her name these days. During her time with Nathan, he’d never given her any spending money, and Richard had never sent her funds either. Catherine had spoiled her with cash once, yet she’d blown every penny on frivolous splurges. On top of that, she’d emptied all her personal savings currying favor with Victoria. Looking back on how she’d poured her whole heart into the Hawthorne family, Camille was eaten alive by regret.
The Sterlings were the only reliable people left in her life.
“Thank you, Aunt Riona. I’ll listen to every word you say from now on.” Camille wiped her wet cheeks, missing the fleeting coldness in Riona’s eyes.
“Get plenty of rest. I’ve got errands to run, so I’ll head out.” Riona left the ward alongside Zoe.

Inside the elevator, Zoe looked anxious. “Rioną, do you really think this plan will work? Camille strikes me as stubborn; she might refuse our demands.”
Riona stood tall, her face blank and unreadable as she stared straight ahead.
“Look how far she’s fallen. She has no other options besides complying. Once the truth comes out, she ought to be grateful I’m even giving her a place within the Sterling household.”
Zoe knew better than to argue once Riona set her mind on something–no one could sway her decisions.
“I suppose you’re right…” It was Camille’s own fault for landing herself in such a mess.
“Once her divorce from Nathan is finalized, I’ll lay out our terms,” Riona said with a faint, icy smirk toward Zoe. “If she refuses, the Sterlings will cut all ties with her. Our family has no use for dead weight that

A cold sweat broke out across Zoe’s back. She forced an awkward laugh and said nothing in response.
That night before bed, Elena scrolled online, searching for news about Camille. Earlier that day, multiple articles showing Camille being rushed to the hospital covered in blood had popped up everywhere. By evening, every single post had vanished without & trace.
Nathan was ruthless enough to manipulate and discard Camille; he would never bother scrubbing tabloid news for her sake. Only the Sterling family had the power to erase all coverage so quickly.
Elena didn’t linger on the thought. She locked her phone and closed her eyes to rest.
She drifted into a fitful sleep, and a horrific nightmare unfolded behind her lids. She saw Camille lying pale on a hospital bed, her stomach swollen huge and taut as if ready to split open. Thick, dark blood gushed endlessly from beneath her hips, spreading slowly across the floor, creeping closer and closer to Elena’s feet.
“Elena, this is all your fault!” Camille’s eerie, twisted grin stretched wide across her face. “You stole my child’s life—now yours has to pay the price!”
A pair of bloodied hands shot forward, reaching straight for Elena’s belly.
“Stop!” Elena threw her arms over her stomach, twisting wildly to swat the hands away. “Don’t touch me!”
She jolted awake with a sharp gasp, her chest heaving. The familiar bedroom surrounded her, along with the soft nightlight Alexander had specially set up for her. Her scattered thoughts slowly settled back to reality. It had only been a nightmare.
She glanced over to the empty half of the mattress beside her, the sheets still faintly warm to the touch.
“Alex?” she called toward the bathroom.
A moment later, the bathroom door swung open, Alexander stepping out with his phone in one hand.
“What woke you?” He sat down beside her, brushing his palm across her damp forehead, his brows drawing tight with worry. “Bad dream?”
Elena forced a soft smile to ease his anxiety. “Just silly recurring dreams lately.”
