**TITLE: Doomsday Rebirth 103**

**Chapter 103: The Choice**

Caroline returned much quicker than Reese had anticipated, and in that instant, Reese’s heart plummeted. Could it be true? Was Caroline really here to save them?

In a rush of panic, Reese instinctively covered her mouth, her mind racing with the fear that Caroline might have overheard the unkind words they had exchanged about her. What if those harsh judgments had swayed her, made her reconsider her decision to help?

As Caroline approached, Reese’s gaze was drawn to the small bag she held tightly in her hand. A flicker of hope ignited within her—perhaps it contained food, something warm to stave off the biting cold. But as she scrutinized the bag, her optimism waned; it was far too small to hold anything substantial.

Yet, her eyes couldn’t help but linger on Caroline’s luxurious mink coat, a garment that shimmered with elegance. Oh, how Reese longed for that coat, the warmth it promised, the status it conferred.

With a mix of eagerness and trepidation, Caroline opened the bag. But as the contents were revealed, Reese’s smile evaporated, replaced by a pallor that washed over her face. Inside lay a heavy hatchet, some bandages, and a few vials of medicine.

“Caroline, what on earth does this mean?” Reese’s voice trembled with disbelief, her mind racing to comprehend the implications.

Calmly, Caroline met her gaze, but in her mind, she was haunted by memories of her past life—vivid images of betrayal, of Jonathan’s deceit, of the horrific moment they had cut her open, draining her very essence while others feasted on her flesh. Nearby, Reese was unwrapping a piece of candy from her storage, the sound of the crinkling wrapper contrasting sharply with the gravity of the moment.

“Reese,” Caroline said, her tone icy, “you must understand the power Jonathan’s family wields. You cling to him, believing that enduring hardship together will earn you a place by his side as his wife. But now, that opportunity hangs in the balance.”

She gestured towards the bag. “Jonathan’s hands and feet are frozen solid, a severe case of frostbite. If you don’t act now to sever them, the infection will spread. He could lose an entire arm or leg, and then what? The Lowlands’ beloved grandson will be nothing but a ruined man.”

With a determined shove, Caroline thrust the bag towards Reese. “These are the tools you need. You can save him, but it requires a choice—your choice.”

Reese was momentarily rendered speechless, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts.

She was transported back to the night before the government’s rescue arrived in her previous life. The memory of being knocked out alongside Jonathan flooded her senses, a deep-seated suspicion towards Caroline rising within her, though she had never been able to prove it.

For years, Reese had regarded Caroline with a dismissive eye, viewing her as nothing more than a cruel yet ultimately ineffective rival. But now, the truth struck her like a thunderbolt—she had been utterly mistaken.

“Caroline, have you lost your mind? You’re trying to kill Jonathan! Do you even grasp the extent of his family’s influence? They may not be here now, but when the rescue team arrives, and I reach out to them, they will uncover everything you’ve done! His grandmother will ensure you pay dearly for this!”

Caroline nearly chuckled at Reese’s outburst, a glint of amusement dancing in her eyes.

She took a step forward, causing Reese to instinctively retreat, her heart racing.

With a sardonic smile, Caroline retorted, “Everyone knows you two are an item. If he dies, who do you think will bear the blame? You? Or me? You can threaten me all you want, but your focus should be on saving him. I’ve shown you the only way—whether you take action is entirely up to you.”

With that, she closed the stairwell door behind her, leaving Reese alone with her spiraling thoughts.
