Chapter 679 Mutant Blood

The largest shelter–the one used to contact the government and other cities–had been reduced to ruins.
Everyone inside had been turned into mummified corpses.
This wasn’t caused by Lossael and his small group alone. There were other Sea Folk involved.
It seemed the Sea Folk had treated Doestera like a testing ground–first coming ashore to fight humans head–on, then retreating back into the ocean.
Only Lossael and a few others stayed behind, continuing onward with a clear purpose.
According to Nelson and the team’s research, their last trip ashore was really about searching for a rare kind of “water.”
But it wasn’t water in the usual sense.
It was human blood.
This wave of natural disasters had hit the ocean hard as well.
The previous acid rain had already killed off large numbers of sea plants and animals.
Those that survived ended up mutating, just like life on land.
But the Sea Folk didn’t mutate–or rather, it seemed they had completed their mutations long ago. Every Sea Folk possessed “soundwave abilities,” along with tough skin and powerful physical strength. In terms of raw combat power, they weren’t on the same level as humans at all.
Life in the ocean had become difficult for them too.
That was why they had come ashore, searching for a new way out.
And that was when they discovered human blood.
According to Nelson’s research, the blood of ordinary humans didn’t hold much attraction for them.
What truly drew them in was the blood of mutants.
The higher the level of the mutant, the stronger the pull.

Mutants who carried life energy were almost irresistibly tempting.
Nelson just happened to be a high–level mutant with life energy.
So Caroline believed the Sea Folk would eventually come looking for Nelson again.
Lossael was probably just a squad leader, even if he was called a king among the Sea Folk.
The dangers ahead would be far greater than before.
The medicine Nelson had handed over was only the first step.
After that, he wanted to see if he could develop a vaccine, a drug, or even a defensive method -something that would stop the Sea Folk from draining human blood.
“I even want to create a drug that makes all human blood poisonous to them,” Nelson said, his eyes shining. “Let them drink it. One sip, and they’ll bleed from every opening.”
As he said this, the gleam in his eyes, combined with the scalpel in his hand, made it seem like he might start slicing up Sea Folk on the spot.
Caroline and the military gave Nelson full approval–and full support–for his passion.
Over the next few days, aside from developing medicine, Nelson focused on studying Shane. He used the same method as before, soaking Shane in spring water.
But disappointingly … it had no effect at all.
There were no visible changes in Shane’s body.
As for his abilities, he was the same as ever–able to handle whatever came at him, reacting to every situation. No new powers had shown up, nothing impressive or surprising.
Nelson continued his research for a few more days before finally giving up.
He concluded that Shane’s ability was already at the highest level. While it could improve through environment and combat, it had to be developed by Shane himself.
The spring water was completely useless to him.
If they told him to soak, he soaked. If they said it wouldn’t work, fine, it didn’t.
Once everything was done, he got ready to leave.
