Chapter 14
In the following days, Dominic wandered like a ghost through places where Mia might appear.
He watched her have dinner with Winston at restaurants, saw her flash brilliant smiles he had never seen before, observed them chatting under the maple trees in Central Park-each scene torturing him like a dull knife slowly cutting flesh.
His phone vibrated in his pocket-an urgent call from the domestic headquarters.
The sounds of board room arguments came through the receiver. He closed his eyes and finally booked a return flight.
Before boarding, his assistant’s panicked voice made his heart sink.
“Mr. Cross, Miss Letty has disappeared. Her passport and luggage are gone.”
Dominic immediately thought of Mia.
A few hours later, he stood on New York’s streets again. Letty’s shrill cursing cut through the evening wind like poisoned ice picks piercing his
ears.
She was frantically pounding on an apartment door, her makeup streaked across her face, screaming hysterically.
“Mia, you bitch, why didn’t you die! Why did you have to appear in front of Dominic again!”
Mia had just gotten out of her car. Hearing this, she merely frowned and tried to sidestep around her, but Letty grabbed her arm with a death
grip.
“Do you know? All these years, Dominic thought I was his lifesaver!”
“He was beaten half to death in that alley-you scared those people away, and you went to buy the medicine! But when you came back, the ambulance had already arrived! I just took your place in the car, and he promised to protect me for life!”
“When your family was destroyed, he was there comforting me, telling me not to be afraid, saying he’d protect me and make sure you could never find me! Whatever lies I casually told, he never questioned them-he’d believe me unconditionally!”
“Mia, you lost because you were too stupid! You thought he loved you? He only loved the idea of his lifesaver!”
Those last words struck Dominic’s heart like a sledgehammer.
All these years, what had he done to Mia?
“Letty!”
Dominic’s voice was hoarse as if scraped by sandpaper. He rushed over and shoved Letty away with such force that she fell directly to the ground.
But when Letty saw him, her face went deathly pale.
“Dominic, when did you arrive? I was just talking nonsense!”
He ignored her completely, turning to Mia, his steps unsteady, his eyes red-rimmed.
“Mia, I’m sorry.”
He wanted to reach out and touch her but was afraid of disturbing her. His hand shook violently in mid-air.

Chapter 14
“I know I was wrong. I really didn’t know the truth was…”
How could a simple “sorry” make up for everything he had done to her?
Mia looked at him quietly, her face expressionless.
“Mr. Cross, it’s all in the past.”
“No, it’s not over!”
Dominic shook his head frantically, his heart feeling as if it had been torn out, the pain making it nearly impossible to breathe.
“Mia, give me another chance, let me make amends…”
Mia interrupted him, stepping back to create distance.
“It’s not necessary.”
“You, Letty, and I-we have nothing to do with each other anymore. Please disappear from my life.”
She turned and walked away after speaking, the sound of her heels clicking against the pavement crisp and decisive, without a trace of
attachment.
Dominic watched her resolute retreating figure, his vision went black, and he collapsed heavily to the ground.
In his final moments of consciousness, he seemed to return to that night in the alley. In his blurred vision, the ponytailed girl desperately calling his name finally came into sharp focus.
