Chapter 2
Thirty minutes later, Cain walked into my room carrying massage oil and a warm towel.
Just like when we were kids, he knelt on one knee, ready to massage my feet.
“Since when does the big shot CEO still do this kind of thing?”
Cain smiled: “Even if I became king of the world, you’d always be my queen. Taking care of you is everything to me.”
His gaze fell on the cigarette burns covering my feet, and something like guilt flickered in his eyes:
“Vera, you went through hell these past three years. I had no idea they’d be so brutal. I’ll make sure they pay for this.”
I stared at his fake sincerity and said quietly:
“When you sent me there, you knew exactly what I’d face. If you really gave a shit, you would’ve brought me home sooner. Isn’t that right?”
Cain’s expression faltered slightly. He sighed helplessly:
“Vera, if I hadn’t sent you away, your stepmother would’ve pressed charges. I didn’t want you branded a criminal, but you fucked up-there had to be consequences.”
“Besides, Luna couldn’t see and needed constant care. Me taking care of her was the only way to stop people from running their mouths about you.”
If I didn’t know he was behind every moment of inhuman torture I’d endured, I might actually believe his earnest act-that he’d done it all for my own good.
I was about to respond when thunder crashed outside, followed by torrential rain.
Muffled cries came from Luna’s room.
by to indark
Cain shot to his feet: “Luna’s always had trouble sleeping during storms. Once thunder wakes her up, she’s up all night. I need to check on her.”
“Vera, finish up here and get some rest.”
He rushed out without a backward glance, missing my ghostly pale face entirely.
Right, Cain had forgotten that thunderstorms terrified me more than anyone.
Eight years ago, my mother was crushed between two out-of-control trucks on a night exactly like this.
Back then, he’d held me as I shook in the corner of my room, his voice breaking:
“Don’t be scared, Vera. I’ll always be here with you. You’re safe.”
The massage oil grew cold as nausea churned in my stomach. I rushed to the bathroom and dry-heaved.
Disgusting. Every place he’d touched felt absolutely revolting.
After splashing cold water on my face a dozen times, I stared at my pale reflection and forced a smile:
“Mom, in the end, we can only rely on ourselves, right?”
The next day, Cain brought in stylists and makeup artists.

Chapter 2
“Vera, Luna said you must be homesick after three years away.”
“She convinced your father to host a family dinner to help mend things with him. Don’t blow off her effort.”
Luna being thoughtful?
Yeah right, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Ever since Mom died and my father Richard immediately moved Luna and her mother into our house, I’d cut all ties with him and moved out of the family home.
The moment I walked in, my stepmother Margaret’s snide voice hit me:
“Well, well, if it isn’t our little princess who loves bullying her sister. Oh wait-should I call you ‘bitch’ now? That’s what they called you over there, right? Ha!”
Richard stood nearby looking disgusted, like even looking at me was beneath him.
Every family friend and business associate was watching me with malicious glee.
And the living room’s massive screen was playing footage from my first year at that institution-me being “disciplined.”
My clothes were torn, blood filling my mouth as I groveled on the ground.
I remembered that scene clearly-it was after I bit off some bastard’s finger when he tried to assault me while drunk.
Leather whips lashed across my back. Even biting down to stay silent, I couldn’t stop the whimpers escaping my throat.
Every whimper excited them more, making them strike harder with steel cables:
“Fucking ungrateful bitch actually bit someone! We’ll knock your teeth out!”
“From now on, you’re nothing but trash. Say it-are you going to behave? Will you ever hurt your sister again?!”
Before I could answer, Cain had grabbed a chair and smashed the screen to pieces.
His face went black as he turned on the butler: “Who the hell told you to play this?!”
Luna was helped over by a servant, tears in her reddened eyes as she grabbed his hand:
“Cain, don’t blame them. I asked for this.”
“Everyone’s saying Vera never learned her lesson, that she just ran away and had a good time. I only wanted to clear up their misunderstanding,
and I thought maybe if Dad saw this, he’d feel sorry for her and stop hating her…”
“It’s all my fault. If you need to hit someone, hit me.”
