Hearing that, Cain’s expression softened:

“Luna, I’m sorry. I was too harsh just now.”

“You meant well, and I appreciate that. Vera, Luna’s just looking out for you. Let it go.”

Just like that, he brushed off the humiliation I’d endured like it was nothing.

Halfway through dinner, Luna suddenly pulled out a gift box, smiling:

“Vera’s suffered so much these past few years. I knelt and prayed at the cathedral steps for hours to get this blessed cross for you. I hope it protects you and gives you a long life.”

Everyone praised how thoughtful and sweet she was. Richard looked absolutely delighted.

Luna smiled as she felt her way toward me, trying to put the cross around my neck.

But only I could see what was etched on the back:

[Fucking bitch deserves to die. Whore should rot in hell.]

I jerked away from her hands:

“Don’t touch me!”

“Ah… that hurts.”

Luna lost her balance and twisted her ankle.

Cain immediately rushed over to steady her, glaring at me:

“Vera, what the hell is wrong with you now?!”

Richard straight-up slapped me across the face:

“You animal! You blinded your sister and she doesn’t even hold a grudge. She goes out of her way to get you blessed, and this is how you treat

her?!”

“I was wondering why those people at the facility beat you up. Now I get it-if you’re this arrogant at home, God knows how insufferable you

were there. You had it coming!”

Hearing his words, I burst out laughing:

“I had it coming? Why don’t you ask your precious illegitimate brat what she really carved on this cross?!”

Richard and Cain instinctively looked at Luna.

Panic flashed across Luna’s face before she whimpered:

“Of course it’s the blessing the priest personally engraved after I prayed at the church all night. I didn’t know Vera would hate it so much.”

“It’s all my fault. Everything I do makes Vera angry. Maybe I should just die-at least then I wouldn’t bother her anymore!”

She grabbed a fruit knife and aimed it at her stomach, but Margaret grabbed her wrist.

Everyone looked at Luna with pity.

“Vera’s like a rabid dog, always attacking her own sister. Sure, Mr. Hart had an affair and Luna was born out of wedlock, but her mom married him legally afterward. Why keep calling her illegitimate?”

“I’ve always hated her attitude! Acting like she owns the world. Getting beaten for years still didn’t fix her-she’s just born evil. Look at those disgusting scars all over her. No wonder Cain can’t stand her.”

One of Cain’s business partners looked at me with revulsion:

“Mr. Sterling, I heard this woman is your fiancée?”

“No offense, but we’re about to sign a major deal. If you marry someone this vicious to her own family, the media will have a field day. I might

have to reconsider our contract…”

Richard, ever the businessman, laughed awkwardly:

“You’ve got it wrong. Cain would never marry this monster. Their engagement’s been off for ages. His real fiancée is Luna.”

“If you’re still worried, I’ll announce right now that Vera Hart is disowned. She’s no longer my daughter. Cain, what do you say?”

Cain stayed silent, meeting my eyes.

Richard caught his hesitation and pressed gently:

“Cain, you’re my chosen successor. I have no sons-someday Hart Industries will be yours. Don’t disappoint me.”

After a few seconds of silence, Cain looked away and took Luna’s hand.

“You’re right.”
