So this was the real purpose of tonight’s dinner.

To turn me into a stray dog, abandoned by both my family and my fiancé.

As I turned to leave, Cain chased after me and shoved a pair of earrings into my hand:

“Vera, this client is really important. Once we close the deal, I’ll explain everything. Just bear with me for now, okay?”

Then he rushed back to Luna’s side.

While everyone cheered, he slipped a huge diamond ring onto her finger.

The earrings in my hand were cheap knockoffs with fake diamonds. If I remembered correctly, they came from the dollar store down the street.

The funny part? Cain forgot I don’t even have pierced ears.

That night, screaming woke me up.

My door was kicked open and Cain dragged me to the floor:

“Vera, I already explained everything to you! Why can’t you just be reasonable?!”

“Fine, so I didn’t acknowledge you publicly today. If you’re pissed at me, come at me! Why the hell did you put nails in Luna’s bed?!”

He dragged me to Luna’s room.

Pink sheets lay scattered on the floor, revealing a mattress studded with nails that glinted coldly in the darkness.

Luna was crying:

“Vera, I know you hate me for showing those videos today, but I was trying to help you.”

“The engagement thing was Dad’s decision. As his daughter, how could I defy him like that? Why would you try to hurt me like this? Are you picking on me because I can’t see?”

Cain grabbed my collar:

“Vera, I thought you’d actually changed, but you’re even more vicious than before!”

“I didn’t do this. You can investigate.”

“Enough! Would Luna nail herself? She’s not twisted like you!”

His face darkened as he stared at me:

“I promised to protect Luna for life, which means keeping her safe in this house. You pulled this sick shit, now you’re gonna pay.”

“Either get on your knees and apologize to Luna, or roll around on those nails. Pick one.”

I laughed at his bullshit:

With that, I turned to walk away, but his next words stopped me cold.

“Guess you don’t want your mother’s ashes back?”

That’s how he and Richard controlled me before-stealing Mom’s ashes to force me overseas.

I came back for this exact reason.

And now they were pulling the same trick.

I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth:

“Fine. I’ll do it.”

Ten minutes later, I crawled off the bed covered in blood.

Nails had pierced my flesh. I could barely stand.

Cain couldn’t help himself-he stepped forward to steady me, sighing:

“Vera, why are you so stubborn? A simple apology would’ve been enough.”

“Does it hurt? Let me take you to the hospital…”

I shoved him away:

“Can I have my mother’s ashes back now?”

He nodded at the butler.

Minutes later, the butler returned with an urn, looking panicked:

“Mr. Sterling, the urn’s here, but the ashes are gone.”

“What?!”

Cain and I both stared in shock.

Luna suddenly covered her mouth, blinking innocently:

“Oh, you mean that round thing in the storage room?”

“I thought it was trash, so I had someone flush it down the toilet…”
