Chapter 7
Seeing Cain’s disbelieving stare, I smiled and waved the remote in my hand.
“These people get half a bowl of rice daily, each bowl laced with concentrated lavender extract. So they’re starving, and when they smell that scent, they think it’s food.”
“I just activated the program. Every minute, Luna’s cage rises five centimeters. They can crawl in when it reaches fifty centimeters high. Your precious Luna has ten minutes left.”
“So Cain, ready to tell the truth?”
Cain scratched his head irritably:
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
I nodded, gesturing for him to look down. The cage had indeed risen five centimeters, and someone’s blackened fingertips nearly grazed Luna’s dress.
Luna screamed hysterically.
“Vera! You’re insane! What truth do you want me to tell?!”
Watching Cain’s furious expression, his shamelessness almost made me laugh.
“Fine, you won’t talk? I’ll help you out.”
At my signal, Xander pulled out a laptop. The giant screen on the opposite wall displayed the video Margaret had shown me that day.
“You made Luna fake blindness so everyone would think I was evil, giving you an excuse to send me overseas to be tortured and killed.”
“Cain, you said malicious people need to learn their place. Now I’m teaching you and them a lesson. Fair enough?”
Cain hadn’t expected me to know everything. His face went ashen.
Snapping out of shock, he glared at Luna:
“You and your mother went behind my back to do this? I said I just wanted Vera to tone down her attitude-you actually tried to kill her?!”
Luna sobbed:
“Cain, I didn’t mean to! I was wrong! I just didn’t want to lose you! Please save me, I swear I’ve learned my lesson!”
Margaret knelt, begging Cain:
“Yes, Cain! For Luna’s sake-you’ve been together-you can’t just let her die!”
Cain hesitated.
When I wasn’t looking, he grabbed the remote and sealed the cage again.
He looked at me guiltily:
“Vera, this is my fault. Luna just made a mistake. She’s your sister-please let her go.”
“Hit me, curse me, hell, take my position as Hart Industries’ president. As long as you forgive us, we’ll get married right now, okay?”

His words made me laugh:
“Cain, you’ve reached new heights of shamelessness. ‘Give’ me? Hart Industries exists because of my mother’s resources and connections. You and Richard climbed over my mom’s corpse to get where you are. Did you think you’d never have to pay?”
Cain’s head snapped up:
“What do you mean?”
“I mean debts must be paid, and murder demands blood.”
“That video was only half the story. You probably don’t know that your dear mother-in-law confessed exactly how you killed my mother.”
My mother was the only daughter of a Golden Triangle kingpin. She fled to escape an arranged marriage, bringing money and connections.
Instead, Richard swindled her of everything and had her killed.
Too ashamed to ask for help, she never contacted Grandfather.
Her greatest fortune and misfortune was dying without revealing her identity.
When Grandfather finally traced her, she was already gone. His people spent ages finding me overseas.
By then, I’d used sheer ruthlessness to build my own power within that sick institution and fought my way out with them.
You think your pathetic resources can challenge the Golden Triangle’s biggest power? What makes you think you can hold onto Hart
Endustries?”
“The truck drivers you paid off have been found and confessed everything. Cain, you’re the real criminal now!”
Cain’s face went white as paper.
He rushed toward me, trying to grab my hands, but Xander blocked him.
“Vera, why didn’t you tell me your background earlier? I only got close to Luna to please your father!”
“I was wrong! I can’t go to prison-I worked so hard to get here! Vera, you can’t abandon me!”
I propped my chin up, smiling:
“Are you begging me? Then show some sincerity. Get on your knees!”
