Chapter 5
Jackson froze, staring at me like he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.
Then he let out a low, bitter laugh.
“Ava, you’d really make up a lie like that just to get sympathy? Just for attention?”
I should’ve died back when my parents did.
Depression had been my shadow ever since that crash.
But Jackson begged me to stay. Over and over again, he pulled me back from the edge, pleading with me to keep living.
Now? He thought all my pain was just some act for attention.
Looking into his eyes-seeing nothing but disgust and contempt-it felt like my heart was being crushed into the dirt.
I forced my face into a smile, muscles twitching.
“Guess I… couldn’t fool you after all.”
I shrugged, like it was no big deal, and laughed it off.
“Can’t help it. Working here, if you don’t want guys forcing drinks down your throat or getting handsy, you gotta come up with a good story.
See? Even Chloe fell for it.”
Chloe opened her mouth, then closed it again. Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Ava…”
I shot her a look. She bit her lip and stayed quiet.
Jackson scoffed.
“You really are shameless.”
His phone buzzed. Isabella’s voice came through, sweet and clingy.
“Babe, when are you coming home? Don’t drink too much, okay? I’ll worry~ I’m waiting for you!”
Jackson glanced at me one last time, then flicked the check at my face.
“I don’t want anything you’ve touched. It’s dirty.”
He leaned in, voice cold and deliberate.
“Since you love making up sob stories so much… you wanna die?”
His lips curled into a cruel smile.
“Then keep that. Buy yourself a coffin.”
And just like that, he left. Didn’t look back once.

The private room felt enormous and empty now. Just me and Chloe.
Chloe was crying.
“Why, Ava? Why would you do that? Why didn’t you just tell him the truth?”
“You’re dying, and you’re still letting those two pieces of shit walk all over you?!”
I shook my head and held up the check, forcing a grin.
“Look. It’s money!”
“A hundred grand. That’s more than we’d make in months. With this, I can… I can buy myself a little more time…”
My hand started trembling as I clutched the check tighter, my voice barely holding together.
“Who else at the bar makes this much in one night? See? I’m good at what I do. Jackson’s… generous, at least.”
Chloe threw her arms around me, sobbing into my shoulder.
Her voice cracked.
“Was it worth it?”
