Wasteland Queen: My Harvest Power novel Chapter 43

Chapter 43 On the Road

Maggie followed them the whole way, occasionally landing on Reina’s shoulder to beg for meat.

They weren’t alone. Many survivors were heading the same way, along with camp guards and mercenaries retreating toward the base.

At first, they ran into quite a few mutant beasts along the road, but the mercenaries and ability users pushed

them back.

Reina joined a few fights and took the chance to harvest some stats. Several of her stats reached 30.

By around 5 p.m., the mercenaries and guards were already far ahead. Luckily, most of the mutant beass on the highway had been cleared.

The survivors on foot fell behind.

As the sun started to set, they had no choice but to find a place to rest.

“Reina, I remember there’s a stone house up ahead. Let’s stay there for the night,” Ursula said.

She had been scavenging with her family since she was a teen and knew the roads between the bases like the back of her hand.

She knew every safe spot along the way.

“Sounds good. Let’s check it out,” Reina agreed.

Since noon, she had been either fighting or walking nonstop. She was exhausted. If her Physique hadn’t reached 30, she wouldn’t be able to keep going.

They walked another mile or so and finally saw a small courtyard by the road.

Inside were three rooms built from stacked stones, with a roof made of massive stone slabs. It looked solid.

But as they got close, several three-feet-long mutant rats suddenly rushed out of the yard.

Their eyes were red. The moment they saw humans, they lunged like they’d found a feast.

Reina reacted instantly, swinging her blade.

With her Strength at 28, dealing with Level 1 and Level 2 mutant rats was easy. One strike, one kill.

Dylan and Chloe dropped their backpacks and rushed in to help.

Within minutes, it was over. Seven or eight mutant rats lay dead on the ground. Two of them were Level 3.

Reina kept a cool head. She didn’t kill the Level 3 ones; she just chopped off their limbs and left them with

one breath left.

Then she led Chloe and the others into the courtyard.

It wasn’t big. The walls were only about six feet high.

A bundle of dry firewood was stacked against the wall, but there wasn’t much else besides the ten or so

mutant rats.

It looked like a spot people used often. It was clean, stocked with firewood, and there were no mutant plants.

The three rooms had no windows, just two palm-sized metal vents, probably the handiwork of a Metal Ability User.

After about ten minutes, all the mutant rats-inside and outside-were cleared. The bodies piled up in the courtyard.

A few Level 3 ones were still barely alive, grouped together.

But the rat corpses were a big problem. At night, they would definitely attract mutant beasts.

Burning or burying them would take hours.

“What if we drag them inside, put them all in one room, and block the door? No windows. The smell won’ get out,” Ursula suggested.

That was a terrible idea.

Reina shook her head. “No way. In this heat, they’ll rot in a few hours. And mutant bugs get in everywhere. The whole room will be full of maggots. You won’t be able to stay there,”

“She’s right, and at night, flies will lay eggs. They hatch in a minute, grow in ten. One mutant rat could be eaten clean in under half an hour.”

Chloe shivered just thinking about it.

Dylan said, “Then let’s just carry them outside and dump them far away.”

“Sounds good!” Everyone agreed.

So Dylan, Chloe, and Merrick Grisham dragged the rats outside, while Sasha and the injured Ursula cleaned the rooms.

Reina took the chance to harvest the still-alive mutant rats. She got 8 stat points, one Level 3 mutant rat crystal core, and a rat tooth.

She stopped when her Energy dropped to 1.
