Wasteland Queen: My Harvest Power novel Chapter 46

Chapter 46 Wolves at the Door

Terry looked up, saw Merrick wasn’t moved, and kept pleading. “Alice… she’s pregnant. I-I don’t want anything to happen to her. Please, I’m begging you.”

Merrick hesitated when he heard that.

But he knew he couldn’t just make decisions for the group. He and Ursula had just joined Reina’s group he couldn’t let something like this cause a rift in the team.

Ursula saw his hesitation and immediately got upset. She pulled him inside.

The other survivors in the yard, seeing Merrick about to shut them out, began to plead desperately. “Sir we aren’t with them! Don’t kick us out!”

“Yeah, we just met them on the road, traveling together for safety!”

“It’s dangerous outside. Please let us stay. We won’t cause trouble!”

Everyone started talking all at once, quickly distancing themselves from Terry’s group.

Inside, Dylan was talking to Reina.

“Reina, maybe we should let them stay. If we push them too hard, they might get desperate and attack us, it’ll be bad.”

Reina thought it over and nodded. “Fine. Tell them to stay in the west room and not to disturb us.”

It was a matter of life and death. If they refused to let them stay, those dozen or so people might band together and fight back. Things would get messy.

Even though her stats were at Level 3, she didn’t have strong offensive abilities. She couldn’t take on that many people without taking damage.

No matter how strong someone is, they can’t take on a crowd alone. She might survive, and even escape. But Chloe and the others might not.

For safety’s sake, it was better to let them stay.

Dylan nodded and went outside. Reina stayed in the room and started cutting sweet potatoes to cook them.

Chloe shook the water bottle and whispered, “We don’t have much water left. We can’t boil them.

“Then we’ll just roast the sweet potato slices dry. We’ll have to make do with a little water for tonight”

“Got it. I’ll grab the pan.”

They got to work. Dylan came back and said, “They’ve settled in the west room.”

Reina continued slicing. “Got it. Dylan, you and Merrick go grab the firewood from the yard and bring it inside.”

The men went out.

The four women stayed and kept slicing sweet potatoes. Soon, half of it was done.

They lit a fire in the room, sat around it, and used a metal pot to dry-roast the sweet potato slices

Before long, the room filled with a sweet, warm smell.

Reina ate a few slices, then stopped. She took a sip of water, pulled her sleeping bag from her pack, and leaned back to rest her eyes.

Dylan whispered to Merrick, “We’ll take turns keeping watch. You sleep for four hours first-then we switch.

He didn’t plan to let Reina take watch. Everyone was counting on her to protect them. She couldn’t afford to be exhausted.

Merrick nodded and lay down with his wife in another corner.

In the middle of the night, a faint howling sound suddenly drifted over. The sound was getting closer.

Reina snapped awake. She sat up and listened.

“Sounds like wolves,” Dylan said. He and Merrick both stood up, alert..

People from the west room also came out, gripping their weapons, gathering in the main room, nervously staring at the entrance.

This doorway was the only entrance to all three rooms. Unfortunately, there was no actual door.

Still, a flatbed cart had been jammed tightly across the entrance. The cart was piled with luggage and backpacks, sealing the whole doorway shut.

Soon, something entered the yard. The sound of heavy, ragged breathing filled the silence, followed by the frantic scratching of claws against the cart and low growls.

“Wolves! Mutant wolves…” someone whispered in terror. “Oh god, there’s more than one.”

Reina heard it too. She pulled out her machete, only to find the blade was already curled and dulled.

It might work against Level 2 or Level 3 mutant rats, but against a thick-skinned mutant wolf, it would be like hitting stone with an egg.

She picked up Dylan’s machete. As expected, it wasn’t sharp enough either.

The mutant wolves outside were definitely high-level. Without a proper weapon, they were all as good as ‘dead.

Reina’s face darkened. Then she remembered the Ironthorn Beast horn in her beast hide pouch.

If it came down to it, she’d use that and see what happened.
