The snow fell silently, as if burying everything in the world beneath a blanket of white.
Inside the car, the only sound was Mr. Lynch's professional advice. "Since you got married, has Preston always controlled the household finances? I recommend you figure out exactly what his assets look like first."-
Leilani tilted her head, confused.
Mr. Lynch explained, "It just reminded me of that tech CEO who took a one-dollar annual salary to shield his wealth. But Preston shouldn't be like that. I doubt he started scheming against you the moment you got married."
Leilani gave a quiet nod. "I'll look into it. For now, could you drop me off at the bank?"
After visiting the bank, Leilani headed back.
The moment she walked through the door, she saw Sienna cuddling a stray dog.
Preston was holding a towel, carefully wiping the matted, dirty fur of the animal.
Wrapped around the shivering dog was a dark brown scarf.
It was the same scarf Leilani had spent a whole month knitting by hand as a New Year's gift for Preston last year.
The two of them were chatting and laughing.
It wasn't until Sienna spotted Leilani that she gently tugged at Preston's sleeve, shrinking halfway behind his back. "It's Leilani."
Preston put down the towel and signed: *You're back!*
Leilani walked over in silence.
She stared at the little dog in Sienna's arms and curled her lips in a mocking smile. "This little beast sure knows how to find a cozy spot."
Sienna's face flushed red.
She looked up at Preston with wide, pitiful eyes.
Preston's hands moved quickly as he explained: *We found it on the side of the road. It's snowing so heavily. If no one took it in, it would definitely freeze to death this winter. Leila, you used to love small animals.*
Leilani forced a smile. "People change. Come here for a second, I need to talk to you."
With that, she turned and walked straight into the living room.
Sienna pouted, her voice dripping with innocence. "Leilani still hasn't forgiven me. She still blames me. Maybe I should just take the dog and stay at a hotel. I don't want you two fighting over me, and I don't want to put you in a tough spot, Preston."
Preston casually patted the back of Sienna's head. "I'll handle it."
He then followed Leilani into the living room.
Leilani looked up at him. "You know I despise Sienna, don't you? And you know exactly why Austin is lying in a hospital bed, barely alive, right?"
A flash of irritation crossed Preston's eyes.
Preston took her hand and pressed it gently against his lips, signing: *I knew my Leila was the kindest person in the world.*
Leilani pushed him away.
She turned to head upstairs.
Preston watched her back as she walked away. Beneath her knit sweater, she looked incredibly fragile.
He frowned.
When had she gotten so thin?
Preston reached out and caught her arm.
Leilani turned back around.
Preston lowered his gaze with a faint smile and signed: *Leila, don't forget our plans for tonight.*
Sienna's bright voice chimed in from the hallway. "Preston, what plans do you have tonight? Didn't you say you were going to come with me to take the puppy to the vet?"
Leilani didn't want to hear another word.
She just gave a stiff nod.
