They were in a hurry that day because they needed to catch Carla's golf tournament.
Back then, Carla was learning to play golf, and it seemed like every other day she was driving out to a different club for a match. Every time she competed, the whole family would show up to cheer her on, rallying around her like it was a family holiday.
It was only later that she found out Carla's tournament happened to be held in Riverbend City. Swain had just landed and stopped by to see her on his way—nothing more.
Sheridan noticed she didn't have any family with her and would drop in now and then, making time to check on her.
So, what did Sheridan think of her back then?
He told her never to climb over fences again—that kind of risky behavior wasn't worth it. This time, he'd just happened to be passing by, but next time, she might not be so lucky.
She'd tried to explain to Sheridan that she'd only fallen into the water because someone had pushed her.
Sheridan's lips curled, unimpressed.
"The Oceanfront Boardwalk is packed with tourists every day. Funny how none of them ever get 'pushed' into the water—except you."
All these years, no one but her ever knew:
Countless times, in the dead of night, she'd dreamed of drowning—sinking deeper and deeper, trapped and suffocating, utterly alone.
In her dreams, she was lost and helpless, surrounded by people who just crossed their arms and watched, or else laughed and pointed fingers. Not a single person reached out to pull her from the water.
But now, all that aimless drifting and helplessness had a place to land.
For some reason, the phrase "weather the storms together" suddenly popped into Seren's mind.
Maybe that's what she and Lennon had become to each other—two people holding on, side by side, through whatever came their way.
As the sun slipped toward the horizon, they headed back along the path.
The hotel's gardens were lush and beautifully kept. Walking together down the winding paths, they passed through small, quiet corners that felt like secret worlds.
Before they returned to their room, Lennon asked her to wait a moment off to the side while he went to the front desk.
