An hour later.
The rush of excitement in Sheridan's veins had faded, and the effects of the alcohol had mostly worn off. The thrill of indulgence was gone, and as he glanced at Willa lying beside him, he found himself surprisingly indifferent.
Back when Willa had been out of reach, she'd seemed like a gust of wind—untouchable, mysterious, impossible to grasp. Now that he'd had her, he realized she was no different from any of the other women he'd known. Easy to get. Predictable.
And things that come too easily always lose their flavor.
His clothes were in disarray. Sheridan grabbed his phone to call for a fresh set from his assistant, adding a specific request for emergency contraception. He was, after all, a product of an old, influential family. Since childhood, his father had drummed it into him: Have your fun, but always take precautions.
No messy scandals. No illegitimate children to tarnish the Powers family name. Nothing that would bring shame to the legacy.
He hadn't used protection with Willa just now, so all he could do was make sure she took the pill.
Fishing a cigar from the pocket of his discarded shirt, Sheridan tossed the shirt into the trash. He lit up, took a slow drag, and exhaled, the smoke curling lazily in the air.
On the bed, Willa was exhausted from their time together. She'd wanted to ask why he'd gotten up, but the familiar scent of cigar smoke drifting over made it clear. No need to ask—she knew Sheridan only got out of bed for his post-coital smoke.
Most men did. She'd seen it enough times to know it was just part of the routine.
By the time Sheridan finished his cigar, someone knocked, delivering his clothes and the medication.
He dressed meticulously—crisp white shirt, tie perfectly knotted, every button fastened. In the mirror, the man looking back was young, confident, and full of energy, a far cry from the drunken mess he'd been an hour ago.
