Their call ended when Lennon phoned. With so much on her mind, everything else faded into the background. She answered his call but was quiet, offering only listless responses to his questions.
Lennon quickly picked up on her mood. “Is something on your mind, Mrs. Crestwell?”
She didn’t hide it from him, recounting everything Nadine had just told her. “I’m not worried about anything else,” she finished, “I’m just scared Grandfather will get sick if he finds out.”
The old man had a heart condition and had already had a brush with death after a previous heart attack. His doctor had warned that he couldn’t handle any major shocks.
There was a moment of silence on Lennon’s end before he asked softly, “Do you want my help?”
“No,” Seren answered without hesitation. She didn’t want Lennon involved with the Rutledge Group mess in any way. To her, while the company was her grandfather’s legacy, it now belonged to Zena. And though she worried for her grandfather, she had no desire to help Zena.
She asked him, a little apprehensively, “Do you think I’m being cold-hearted?” She didn’t care what others thought, but his opinion mattered to her.
Lennon’s voice came through the line, steady and reassuring. “I will always be on your side, Mrs. Crestwell. They were the ones who cut ties with you first. You’ve paid your severance; you have no further connection to them and certainly no obligation to bail them out. Besides, they brought this on themselves. The internet is calling them unscrupulous, and they’re not wrong.”
His words were firm and gentle. It was as if she had found her anchor, a solid ground beneath her feet. She realized then that Lennon had always been on her side, had never once doubted her. He offered her his unwavering trust and support.
Deeply moved, she suddenly felt the urge to voice the words she had kept hidden in her heart. “Lennon, you are so incredibly good to me. I think I’m falling more and more in love with you. I can’t imagine being without you.”
The words tumbled out, unable to be contained by the depth of her feelings.
“If my Mrs. Crestwell can’t be without me, then that’s perfect,” Lennon replied, a smile in his voice. “Because I can’t be without my Mrs. Crestwell either.”
