After his assistant left, Edwin rose and strode to the floor-to-ceiling window. He shook a cigarette from its pack and lit it with practiced ease. It was a menthol blend, the kind that left a clean scent instead of a stale smokiness—most women disliked the smell of tobacco. He had been too keyed up to sleep last night, only to be met with this.

As smoke swirled around him, Edwin's narrow eyes narrowed further. He had a gut feeling this had something to do with the files Carla had sent him. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so quiet. He had pursued her for nearly a decade and knew her personality inside and out. Carla wasn't the type to be easily dismissed. On the contrary, she was intensely selfish and never let herself be slighted. He had been prepared for her to cling to him after this was all over and had even arranged for leverage to keep her in check.

Half an hour later, his assistant returned. The ashtray was already littered with cigarette butts. Edwin was back on the sofa, a half-smoked cigarette held between his long, pale fingers.
