Many of the old guard at Montgomery Group already disapproved of his status as an illegitimate son. A scandal of this magnitude could cost him his position as heir, something even his father might not be able to prevent. Still, he found it hard to believe. Carla, the pampered princess of the Bradley family, resorting to death threats? It seemed too extreme.
Edwin let out a low chuckle. "Baby, what are you talking about? You have such a bright future, so many wonderful things to experience. You wouldn't really throw it all away, would you?"
"My mother wants me to marry Garfield from Elegance," Carla said flatly. "You tell me if I'd throw it all away."
Zena had informed her of the engagement earlier that evening, her tone leaving no room for argument. Carla hadn't said a word then, but that didn't mean she was going to meekly accept her fate as the wife of some old, ugly man.
Edwin knew Garfield. Elegance was a real estate giant, and Garfield was a big name in the industry. Carla was twenty-one. Garfield was nearly fifty, a widower with a son and a daughter. While Carla was hardly a virgin, in this day and age, that was no longer a deal-breaker. She could still easily marry into a comfortable, upper-middle-class family.
For Zena to marry her off to Garfield… it wasn't marriage, it was selling her daughter. No wonder Carla was desperate.
After a moment of silence, Edwin laughed again. "Baby, I thought your mother adored you. Why would she be so cruel as to push you to this?"
Carla's expression flickered, but she quickly composed herself. "Edwin, you can drop the crocodile tears. Weren't you the one who pushed me to the edge first?"
So, the woman wasn't a complete idiot after all.
Edwin's own mother had been the other woman. And now she was living a life of luxury, having successfully installed her son as the heir to the Montgomery Group. No one dared to criticize a winner. Only the losers were branded as homewreckers and shunned by society.
Edwin smoked in silence, his expression unreadable.
Carla didn't press him. She was smart enough to know when to stop. She had to give him time to weigh his options, not corner him into doing something drastic. She was confident that, after considering the consequences, he would choose to marry her. He craved the position of heir more than anyone.
But his silence stretched on, and her confidence began to waver. She didn't know him that well, after all. This was her last gamble.
